Psalm 35

CJB 1 By David: ADONAI, oppose those who oppose me; fight against those who fight against me. NIV 1 Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. CJB 2 Grasp your shield and protective gear, and rise to my defense. NIV 2 Take up shield and buckler; arise and come to my aid. CJB 3 Brandish spear and battle-axe against my pursuers; let me hear you say, "I am your salvation." NIV 3 Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to my soul, "I am your salvation." CJB 4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to confusion; may those who are plotting harm for me be repulsed and put to shame. NIV 4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay. CJB 5 May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of ADONAI to drive them on. NIV 5 May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away; CJB 6 May their way be dark and slippery, with the angel of ADONAI to pursue them. NIV 6 may their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them. CJB 7 For unprovoked, they hid their net over a pit; unprovoked, they dug it for me. NIV 7 Since they hid their net for me without cause and without cause dug a pit for me, CJB 8 May destruction come over him unawares. May the net he concealed catch himself; may he fall into it and be destroyed. NIV 8 may ruin overtake them by surprise-- may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin. CJB 9 Then I will be joyful in ADONAI, I will rejoice in his salvation. NIV 9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation. CJB 10 All my bones will say, "Who is like you? Who can rescue the weak from those stronger than they, the poor and needy from those who exploit them?" NIV 10 My whole being will exclaim, "Who is like you, O LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them." CJB 11 Malicious witnesses come forward, asking me things about which I know nothing. NIV 11 Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about. CJB 12 They repay me evil for good; it makes me feel desolate as a parent bereaved. NIV 12 They repay me evil for good and leave my soul forlorn. CJB 13 But I, when they were ill, wore sackcloth; I put myself out and fasted; I can pray that what I prayed for them might also happen to me. NIV 13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered, CJB 14 I behaved as I would for my friend or my brother; I bent down in sorrow as if mourning my mother. NIV 14 I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother. CJB 15 But when I stumble, they gather in glee; they gather against me and strike me unawares; they tear me apart unceasingly. NIV 15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; attackers gathered against me when I was unaware. They slandered me without ceasing. CJB 16 With ungodly mocking and grimacing, they grind their teeth at me. NIV 16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked; they gnashed their teeth at me. CJB 17 Adonai, how much longer will you look on? Rescue me from their assaults, save the one life I have from the lions! NIV 17 O Lord, how long will you look on? Rescue my life from their ravages, my precious life from these lions. CJB 18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly, I will give you praise among huge crowds of people. NIV 18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among throngs of people I will praise you. CJB 19 Don't let those who are wrongfully my enemies gloat over me; and those who hate me unprovoked -don't let them smirk at me. NIV 19 Let not those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; let not those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye. CJB 20 For they don't speak words of peace but devise ways to deceive the peaceful of the land. NIV 20 They do not speak peaceably, but devise false accusations against those who live quietly in the land. CJB 21 They shout to accuse me, "Aha! Aha! we saw you with our own eyes!" NIV 21 They gape at me and say, "Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it." CJB 22 You saw them, ADONAI; don't stay silent. Adonai, don't stay far away from me. NIV 22 O LORD, you have seen this; be not silent. Do not be far from me, O Lord. CJB 23 Wake up! Get up, my God, my Lord! Defend me and my cause! NIV 23 Awake, and rise to my defense! Contend for me, my God and Lord. CJB 24 Give judgment for me, ADONAI, my God, as your righteousness demands. Don't let them gloat over me. NIV 24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, O LORD my God; do not let them gloat over me. CJB 25 Don't let them say to themselves, "Aha! We got what we wanted!"or say, "We swallowed them up!" NIV 25 Do not let them think, "Aha, just what we wanted!" or say, "We have swallowed him up." CJB 26 May those who gloat over my distress be disgraced and humiliated. May those who aggrandize themselves at my expense be covered with shame and confusion. NIV 26 May all who gloat over my distress be put to shame and confusion; may all who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and disgrace. CJB 27 But may those who delight in my righteousness shout for joy and be glad! Let them say always, "How great is ADONAI, who delights in the peace of his servant!"Then my tongue will tell of your righteousness and praise you all day long. NIV 27 May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, "The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant."
