Psalm 35

GNT 1 Oppose those who oppose me, Lord, and fight those who fight against me! NIV 1 Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. GNT 2 Take your shield and armor and come to my rescue. NIV 2 Take up shield and buckler; arise and come to my aid. GNT 3 Lift up your spear and war ax against those who pursue me. Promise that you will save me. NIV 3 Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to my soul, "I am your salvation." GNT 4 May those who try to kill me be defeated and disgraced! May those who plot against me be turned back and confused! NIV 4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay. GNT 5 May they be like straw blown by the wind as the angel of the Lord pursues them! NIV 5 May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away; GNT 6 May their path be dark and slippery while the angel of the Lord strikes them down! NIV 6 may their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them. GNT 7 Without any reason they laid a trap for me and dug a deep hole to catch me. NIV 7 Since they hid their net for me without cause and without cause dug a pit for me, GNT 8 But destruction will catch them before they know it; they will be caught in their own trap and fall to their destruction! NIV 8 may ruin overtake them by surprise-- may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin. GNT 9 Then I will be glad because of the Lord; I will be happy because he saved me. NIV 9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation. GNT 10 With all my heart I will say to the Lord, "There is no one like you. You protect the weak from the strong, the poor from the oppressor." NIV 10 My whole being will exclaim, "Who is like you, O LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them." GNT 11 Evil people testify against me and accuse me of crimes I know nothing about. NIV 11 Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about. GNT 12 They pay me back evil for good, and I sink in despair. NIV 12 They repay me evil for good and leave my soul forlorn. GNT 13 But when they were sick, I dressed in mourning; I deprived myself of food; I prayed with my head bowed low, NIV 13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered, GNT 14 as I would pray for a friend or a brother. I went around bent over in mourning, as one who mourns for his mother. NIV 14 I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother. GNT 15 But when I was in trouble, they were all glad and gathered around to make fun of me; strangers beat me and kept striking me. NIV 15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; attackers gathered against me when I was unaware. They slandered me without ceasing. GNT 16 Like those who would mock a cripple, they glared at me with hate. NIV 16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked; they gnashed their teeth at me. GNT 17 How much longer, Lord, will you just look on? Rescue me from their attacks; save my life from these lions! NIV 17 O Lord, how long will you look on? Rescue my life from their ravages, my precious life from these lions. GNT 18 Then I will thank you in the assembly of your people; I will praise you before them all. NIV 18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among throngs of people I will praise you. GNT 19 Don't let my enemies, those liars, gloat over my defeat. Don't let those who hate me for no reason smirk with delight over my sorrow. NIV 19 Let not those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; let not those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye. GNT 20 They do not speak in a friendly way; instead they invent all kinds of lies about peace-loving people. NIV 20 They do not speak peaceably, but devise false accusations against those who live quietly in the land. GNT 21 They accuse me, shouting, "We saw what you did!" NIV 21 They gape at me and say, "Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it." GNT 22 But you, O Lord, have seen this. So don't be silent, Lord; don't keep yourself far away! NIV 22 O LORD, you have seen this; be not silent. Do not be far from me, O Lord. GNT 23 Rouse yourself, O Lord, and defend me; rise up, my God, and plead my cause. NIV 23 Awake, and rise to my defense! Contend for me, my God and Lord. GNT 24 You are righteous, O Lord, so declare me innocent; don't let my enemies gloat over me. NIV 24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, O LORD my God; do not let them gloat over me. GNT 25 Don't let them say to themselves, "We are rid of him! That's just what we wanted!" NIV 25 Do not let them think, "Aha, just what we wanted!" or say, "We have swallowed him up." GNT 26 May those who gloat over my suffering be completely defeated and confused; may those who claim to be better than I am be covered with shame and disgrace. NIV 26 May all who gloat over my distress be put to shame and confusion; may all who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and disgrace. GNT 27 May those who want to see me acquitted shout for joy and say again and again, "How great is the Lord! He is pleased with the success of his servant." NIV 27 May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, "The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant." GNT 28 Then I will proclaim your righteousness, and I will praise you all day long. NIV 28 My tongue will speak of your righteousness and of your praises all day long.
