Psalm 35

RSV 1 A Psalm of David. Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me! NIV 1 Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. RSV 2 Take hold of shield and buckler, and rise for my help! NIV 2 Take up shield and buckler; arise and come to my aid. RSV 3 Draw the spear and javelin against my pursuers! Say to my soul, "I am your deliverance!" NIV 3 Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to my soul, "I am your salvation." RSV 4 Let them be put to shame and dishonor who seek after my life! Let them be turned back and confounded who devise evil against me! NIV 4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay. RSV 5 Let them be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them on! NIV 5 May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away; RSV 6 Let their way be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them! NIV 6 may their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them. RSV 7 For without cause they hid their net for me; without cause they dug a pit for my life. NIV 7 Since they hid their net for me without cause and without cause dug a pit for me, RSV 8 Let ruin come upon them unawares! And let the net which they hid ensnare them; let them fall therein to ruin! NIV 8 may ruin overtake them by surprise-- may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin. RSV 9 Then my soul shall rejoice in the LORD, exulting in his deliverance. NIV 9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation. RSV 10 All my bones shall say, "O LORD, who is like thee, thou who deliverest the weak from him who is too strong for him, the weak and needy from him who despoils him?" NIV 10 My whole being will exclaim, "Who is like you, O LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them." RSV 11 Malicious witnesses rise up; they ask me of things that I know not. NIV 11 Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about. RSV 12 They requite me evil for good; my soul is forlorn. NIV 12 They repay me evil for good and leave my soul forlorn. RSV 13 But I, when they were sick--I wore sackcloth, I afflicted myself with fasting. I prayed with head bowed on my bosom, NIV 13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered, RSV 14 as though I grieved for my friend or my brother; I went about as one who laments his mother, bowed down and in mourning. NIV 14 I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother. RSV 15 But at my stumbling they gathered in glee, they gathered together against me; cripples whom I knew not slandered me without ceasing; NIV 15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; attackers gathered against me when I was unaware. They slandered me without ceasing. RSV 16 they impiously mocked more and more, gnashing at me with their teeth. NIV 16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked; they gnashed their teeth at me. RSV 17 How long, O LORD, wilt thou look on? Rescue me from their ravages, my life from the lions! NIV 17 O Lord, how long will you look on? Rescue my life from their ravages, my precious life from these lions. RSV 18 Then I will thank thee in the great congregation; in the mighty throng I will praise thee. NIV 18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among throngs of people I will praise you. RSV 19 Let not those rejoice over me who are wrongfully my foes, and let not those wink the eye who hate me without cause. NIV 19 Let not those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; let not those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye. RSV 20 For they do not speak peace, but against those who are quiet in the land they conceive words of deceit. NIV 20 They do not speak peaceably, but devise false accusations against those who live quietly in the land. RSV 21 They open wide their mouths against me; they say, "Aha, Aha! our eyes have seen it!" NIV 21 They gape at me and say, "Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it." RSV 22 Thou hast seen, O LORD; be not silent! O Lord, be not far from me! NIV 22 O LORD, you have seen this; be not silent. Do not be far from me, O Lord. RSV 23 Bestir thyself, and awake for my right, for my cause, my God and my Lord! NIV 23 Awake, and rise to my defense! Contend for me, my God and Lord. RSV 24 Vindicate me, O LORD, my God, according to thy righteousness; and let them not rejoice over me! NIV 24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, O LORD my God; do not let them gloat over me. RSV 25 Let them not say to themselves, "Aha, we have our heart's desire!" Let them not say, "We have swallowed him up." NIV 25 Do not let them think, "Aha, just what we wanted!" or say, "We have swallowed him up." RSV 26 Let them be put to shame and confusion altogether who rejoice at my calamity! Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves against me! NIV 26 May all who gloat over my distress be put to shame and confusion; may all who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and disgrace. RSV 27 Let those who desire my vindication shout for joy and be glad, and say evermore, "Great is the LORD, who delights in the welfare of his servant!" NIV 27 May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, "The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant." RSV 28 Then my tongue shall tell of thy righteousness and of thy praise all the day long. NIV 28 My tongue will speak of your righteousness and of your praises all day long.
