Psalm 37

MSG 1 Don't bother your head with braggarts or wish you could succeed like the wicked. NIV 1 Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong; MSG 2 In no time they'll shrivel like grass clippings and wilt like cut flowers in the sun. NIV 2 for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. MSG 3 Get insurance with God and do a good deed, settle down and stick to your last. NIV 3 Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. MSG 4 Keep company with God, get in on the best. NIV 4 Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. MSG 5 Open up before God, keep nothing back; he'll do whatever needs to be done: NIV 5 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: MSG 6 He'll validate your life in the clear light of day and stamp you with approval at high noon. NIV 6 He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun. MSG 7 Quiet down before God, be prayerful before him. Don't bother with those who climb the ladder, who elbow their way to the top. NIV 7 Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. MSG 8 Bridle your anger, trash your wrath, cool your pipes - it only makes things worse. NIV 8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret--it leads only to evil. MSG 9 Before long the crooks will be bankrupt; God-investors will soon own the store. NIV 9 For evil men will be cut off, but those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land. MSG 10 Before you know it, the wicked will have had it; you'll stare at his once famous place and - nothing! NIV 10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. MSG 11 Down-to-earth people will move in and take over, relishing a huge bonanza. NIV 11 But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy great peace. MSG 12 Bad guys have it in for the good guys, obsessed with doing them in. NIV 12 The wicked plot against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them; MSG 13 But God isn't losing any sleep; to him they're a joke with no punch line. NIV 13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming. MSG 14 Bullies brandish their swords, pull back on their bows with a flourish. They're out to beat up on the harmless, or mug that nice man out walking his dog. NIV 14 The wicked draw the sword and bend the bow to bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose ways are upright. MSG 15 A banana peel lands them flat on their faces - slapstick figures in a moral circus. NIV 15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts, and their bows will be broken. MSG 16 Less is more and more is less. One righteous will outclass fifty wicked, NIV 16 Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked; MSG 17 For the wicked are moral weaklings but the righteous are God-strong. NIV 17 for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous. MSG 18 God keeps track of the decent folk; what they do won't soon be forgotten. NIV 18 The days of the blameless are known to the LORD, and their inheritance will endure forever. MSG 19 In hard times, they'll hold their heads high; when the shelves are bare, they'll be full. NIV 19 In times of disaster they will not wither; in days of famine they will enjoy plenty. MSG 20 God-despisers have had it; God's enemies are finished - Stripped bare like vineyards at harvest time, vanished like smoke in thin air. NIV 20 But the wicked will perish: The LORD's enemies will be like the beauty of the fields, they will vanish--vanish like smoke. MSG 21 Wicked borrows and never returns; Righteous gives and gives. NIV 21 The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously; MSG 22 Generous gets it all in the end; Stingy is cut off at the pass. NIV 22 those the LORD blesses will inherit the land, but those he curses will be cut off. MSG 23 Stalwart walks in step with God; his path blazed by God, he's happy. NIV 23 If the LORD delights in a man's way, he makes his steps firm; MSG 24 If he stumbles, he's not down for long; God has a grip on his hand. NIV 24 though he stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand. MSG 25 I once was young, now I'm a graybeard - not once have I seen an abandoned believer, or his kids out roaming the streets. NIV 25 I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. MSG 26 Every day he's out giving and lending, his children making him proud. NIV 26 They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be blessed. MSG 27 Turn your back on evil, work for the good and don't quit. NIV 27 Turn from evil and do good; then you will dwell in the land forever. MSG 28 God loves this kind of thing, never turns away from his friends. Live this way and you've got it made, but bad eggs will be tossed out. NIV 28 For the LORD loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones. They will be protected forever, but the offspring of the wicked will be cut off; MSG 29 The good get planted on good land and put down healthy roots. NIV 29 the righteous will inherit the land and dwell in it forever. MSG 30 Righteous chews on wisdom like a dog on a bone, rolls virtue around on his tongue. NIV 30 The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks what is just. MSG 31 His heart pumps God's Word like blood through his veins; his feet are as sure as a cat's. NIV 31 The law of his God is in his heart; his feet do not slip. MSG 32 Wicked sets a watch for Righteous, he's out for the kill. NIV 32 The wicked lie in wait for the righteous, seeking their very lives; MSG 33 God, alert, is also on watch - Wicked won't hurt a hair of his head. NIV 33 but the LORD will not leave them in their power or let them be condemned when brought to trial. MSG 34 Wait passionately for God, don't leave the path. He'll give you your place in the sun while you watch the wicked lose it. NIV 34 Wait for the LORD and keep his way. He will exalt you to inherit the land; when the wicked are cut off, you will see it. MSG 35 I saw Wicked bloated like a toad, croaking pretentious nonsense. NIV 35 I have seen a wicked and ruthless man flourishing like a green tree in its native soil, MSG 36 The next time I looked there was nothing - a punctured bladder, vapid and limp. NIV 36 but he soon passed away and was no more; though I looked for him, he could not be found. MSG 37 Keep your eye on the healthy soul, scrutinize the straight life; There's a future in strenuous wholeness. NIV 37 Consider the blameless, observe the upright; there is a future for the man of peace. MSG 38 But the willful will soon be discarded; insolent souls are on a dead-end street. NIV 38 But all sinners will be destroyed; the future of the wicked will be cut off. MSG 39 The spacious, free life is from God, it's also protected and safe. NIV 39 The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble. MSG 40 God-strengthened, we're delivered from evil - when we run to him, he saves us. NIV 40 The LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.
