RSV 1 A Psalm of David. Fret not yourself because of the wicked, be not envious of wrongdoers! NIV 1 Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong; RSV 2 For they will soon fade like the grass, and wither like the green herb. NIV 2 for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. RSV 3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; so you will dwell in the land, and enjoy security. NIV 3 Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. RSV 4 Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. NIV 4 Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. RSV 5 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act. NIV 5 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: RSV 6 He will bring forth your vindication as the light, and your right as the noonday. NIV 6 He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun. RSV 7 Be still before the LORD, and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over him who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! NIV 7 Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. RSV 8 Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. NIV 8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret--it leads only to evil. RSV 9 For the wicked shall be cut off; but those who wait for the LORD shall possess the land. NIV 9 For evil men will be cut off, but those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land. RSV 10 Yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look well at his place, he will not be there. NIV 10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. RSV 11 But the meek shall possess the land, and delight themselves in abundant prosperity. NIV 11 But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy great peace. RSV 12 The wicked plots against the righteous, and gnashes his teeth at him; NIV 12 The wicked plot against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them; RSV 13 but the LORD laughs at the wicked, for he sees that his day is coming. NIV 13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming. RSV 14 The wicked draw the sword and bend their bows, to bring down the poor and needy, to slay those who walk uprightly; NIV 14 The wicked draw the sword and bend the bow to bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose ways are upright. RSV 15 their sword shall enter their own heart, and their bows shall be broken. NIV 15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts, and their bows will be broken. RSV 16 Better is a little that the righteous has than the abundance of many wicked. NIV 16 Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked; RSV 17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken; but the LORD upholds the righteous. NIV 17 for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous. RSV 18 The LORD knows the days of the blameless, and their heritage will abide for ever; NIV 18 The days of the blameless are known to the LORD, and their inheritance will endure forever. RSV 19 they are not put to shame in evil times, in the days of famine they have abundance. NIV 19 In times of disaster they will not wither; in days of famine they will enjoy plenty. RSV 20 But the wicked perish; the enemies of the LORD are like the glory of the pastures, they vanish--like smoke they vanish away. NIV 20 But the wicked will perish: The LORD's enemies will be like the beauty of the fields, they will vanish--vanish like smoke. RSV 21 The wicked borrows, and cannot pay back, but the righteous is generous and gives; NIV 21 The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously; RSV 22 for those blessed by the LORD shall possess the land, but those cursed by him shall be cut off. NIV 22 those the LORD blesses will inherit the land, but those he curses will be cut off. RSV 23 The steps of a man are from the LORD, and he establishes him in whose way he delights; NIV 23 If the LORD delights in a man's way, he makes his steps firm; RSV 24 though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the LORD is the stay of his hand. NIV 24 though he stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand. RSV 25 I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging bread.
