Psalm 38

CEB 1 Please, LORD, don't punish me when you are mad; don't discipline me when you are furious. NIV 1 O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath. CEB 2 Your arrows have pierced me; your fist has come down hard on me. NIV 2 For your arrows have pierced me, and your hand has come down upon me. CEB 3 There's nothing in my body that isn't broken because of your rage; there's no health in my bones because of my sin. NIV 3 Because of your wrath there is no health in my body; my bones have no soundness because of my sin. CEB 4 My wrongdoings are stacked higher than my head; they are a weight that's way too heavy for me. NIV 4 My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear. CEB 5 My wounds reek; they are all infected because of my stupidity. NIV 5 My wounds fester and are loathsome because of my sinful folly. CEB 6 I am hunched over, completely down; I wander around all day long, sad. NIV 6 I am bowed down and brought very low; all day long I go about mourning. CEB 7 My insides are burning up; there's nothing in my body that isn't broken. NIV 7 My back is filled with searing pain; there is no health in my body. CEB 8 I'm worn out, completely crushed; I groan because of my miserable heart. NIV 8 I am feeble and utterly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart. CEB 9 Everything I long for is laid out before you, my Lord; my sighs aren't hidden from you. NIV 9 All my longings lie open before you, O Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you. CEB 10 My heart pounds; my strength abandons me. Even the light of my eyes is gone. NIV 10 My heart pounds, my strength fails me; even the light has gone from my eyes. CEB 11 My loved ones and friends keep their distance from me in my sickness; those who were near me now stay far away. NIV 11 My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds; my neighbors stay far away. CEB 12 Those who want me dead lay traps; those who want me harmed utter threats, muttering lies all day long. NIV 12 Those who seek my life set their traps, those who would harm me talk of my ruin; all day long they plot deception. CEB 13 But I'm like someone who is deaf, who can't hear; like someone who can't speak, whose mouth won't open. NIV 13 I am like a deaf man, who cannot hear, like a mute, who cannot open his mouth; CEB 14 I've become like a person who doesn't hear what is being said, whose mouth has no good comeback. NIV 14 I have become like a man who does not hear, whose mouth can offer no reply. CEB 15 But I wait for you, LORD! You will answer, my Lord, my God! NIV 15 I wait for you, O LORD; you will answer, O Lord my God. CEB 16 Because I prayed: "Don't let them celebrate over me or exalt themselves over me when my foot slips," NIV 16 For I said, "Do not let them gloat or exalt themselves over me when my foot slips." CEB 17 because I'm very close to falling, and my pain is always with me. NIV 17 For I am about to fall, and my pain is ever with me. CEB 18 Yes, I confess my wrongdoing; I'm worried about my sin. NIV 18 I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin. CEB 19 But my mortal enemies are so strong; those who hate me for no reason seem countless. NIV 19 Many are those who are my vigorous enemies; those who hate me without reason are numerous. CEB 20 Those who give, repay good with evil; they oppose me for pursuing good. NIV 20 Those who repay my good with evil slander me when I pursue what is good. CEB 21 Don't leave me all alone, LORD! Please, my God, don't be far from me! NIV 21 O LORD, do not forsake me; be not far from me, O my God. CEB 22 Come quickly and help me, my Lord, my salvation! NIV 22 Come quickly to help me, O Lord my Savior.
