Psalm 38

NLT 1 A psalm of David, to bring us to the LORD's remembrance. O LORD, don't rebuke me in your anger! Don't discipline me in your rage! NIV 1 O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath. NLT 2 Your arrows have struck deep, and your blows are crushing me. NIV 2 For your arrows have pierced me, and your hand has come down upon me. NLT 3 Because of your anger, my whole body is sick; my health is broken because of my sins. NIV 3 Because of your wrath there is no health in my body; my bones have no soundness because of my sin. NLT 4 My guilt overwhelms me -- it is a burden too heavy to bear. NIV 4 My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear. NLT 5 My wounds fester and stink because of my foolish sins. NIV 5 My wounds fester and are loathsome because of my sinful folly. NLT 6 I am bent over and racked with pain. My days are filled with grief. NIV 6 I am bowed down and brought very low; all day long I go about mourning. NLT 7 A raging fever burns within me, and my health is broken. NIV 7 My back is filled with searing pain; there is no health in my body. NLT 8 I am exhausted and completely crushed. My groans come from an anguished heart. NIV 8 I am feeble and utterly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart. NLT 9 You know what I long for, Lord; you hear my every sigh. NIV 9 All my longings lie open before you, O Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you. NLT 10 My heart beats wildly, my strength fails, and I am going blind. NIV 10 My heart pounds, my strength fails me; even the light has gone from my eyes. NLT 11 My loved ones and friends stay away, fearing my disease. Even my own family stands at a distance. NIV 11 My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds; my neighbors stay far away. NLT 12 Meanwhile, my enemies lay traps for me; they make plans to ruin me. They think up treacherous deeds all day long. NIV 12 Those who seek my life set their traps, those who would harm me talk of my ruin; all day long they plot deception. NLT 13 But I am deaf to all their threats. I am silent before them as one who cannot speak. NIV 13 I am like a deaf man, who cannot hear, like a mute, who cannot open his mouth; NLT 14 I choose to hear nothing, and I make no reply. NIV 14 I have become like a man who does not hear, whose mouth can offer no reply. NLT 15 For I am waiting for you, O LORD. You must answer for me, O Lord my God. NIV 15 I wait for you, O LORD; you will answer, O Lord my God. NLT 16 I prayed, "Don't let my enemies gloat over me or rejoice at my downfall." NIV 16 For I said, "Do not let them gloat or exalt themselves over me when my foot slips." NLT 17 I am on the verge of collapse, facing constant pain. NIV 17 For I am about to fall, and my pain is ever with me. NLT 18 But I confess my sins; I am deeply sorry for what I have done. NIV 18 I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin. NLT 19 My enemies are many; they hate me though I have done nothing against them. NIV 19 Many are those who are my vigorous enemies; those who hate me without reason are numerous. NLT 20 They repay me evil for good and oppose me because I stand for the right. NIV 20 Those who repay my good with evil slander me when I pursue what is good. NLT 21 Do not abandon me, LORD. Do not stand at a distance, my God. NIV 21 O LORD, do not forsake me; be not far from me, O my God. NLT 22 Come quickly to help me, O Lord my savior. NIV 22 Come quickly to help me, O Lord my Savior.
