Psalm 39

CSB 1 I said, "I will guard my ways so that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are in my presence." NIV 1 I said, "I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence." CSB 2 I was speechless and quiet; I kept silent, even from [speaking] good, and my pain intensified. NIV 2 But when I was silent and still, not even saying anything good, my anguish increased. CSB 3 My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, a fire burned. I spoke with my tongue: NIV 3 My heart grew hot within me, and as I meditated, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue: CSB 4 "Lord, reveal to me the end of my life and the number of my days. Let me know how transitory I am. NIV 4 "Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life. CSB 5 You, indeed, have made my days short in length, and my life span as nothing in Your sight. Yes, every mortal man is only a vapor. Selah NIV 5 You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man's life is but a breath. "Selah" CSB 6 Certainly, man walks about like a mere shadow. Indeed, they frantically rush around in vain, gathering possessions without knowing who will get them. NIV 6 Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro: He bustles about, but only in vain; he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it. CSB 7 "Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You. NIV 7 "But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you. CSB 8 Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the taunt of fools. NIV 8 Save me from all my transgressions; do not make me the scorn of fools. CSB 9 I am speechless; I do not open my mouth because of what You have done. NIV 9 I was silent; I would not open my mouth, for you are the one who has done this. CSB 10 Remove Your torment from me; I fade away because of the force of Your hand. NIV 10 Remove your scourge from me; I am overcome by the blow of your hand. CSB 11 You discipline a man with punishment for sin, consuming like a moth what is precious to him; every man is a mere vapor. Selah NIV 11 You rebuke and discipline men for their sin; you consume their wealth like a moth-- each man is but a breath. "Selah" CSB 12 "Hear my prayer, Lord, and listen to my cry for help; do not be silent at my tears. For I am a foreigner residing with You, a sojourner like all my fathers. NIV 12 "Hear my prayer, O LORD, listen to my cry for help; be not deaf to my weeping. For I dwell with you as an alien, a stranger, as all my fathers were. CSB 13 Turn Your angry gaze from me so that I may be cheered up before I die and am gone." NIV 13 Look away from me, that I may rejoice again before I depart and am no more."
