Psalm 51

DBY 1 {To the chief Musician. A Psalm of David; when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bath-sheba.} Be gracious unto me, O God, according to thy loving-kindness; according to the abundance of thy tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. NIV 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. DBY 2 Wash me fully from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. NIV 2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. DBY 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is continually before me. NIV 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. DBY 4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done what is evil in thy sight; that thou mayest be justified when thou speakest, be clear when thou judgest. NIV 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge. DBY 5 Behold, in iniquity was I brought forth, and in sin did my mother conceive me. NIV 5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. DBY 6 Behold, thou wilt have truth in the inward parts; and in the hidden [part] thou wilt make me to know wisdom. NIV 6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place. DBY 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. NIV 7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. DBY 8 Make me to hear gladness and joy; [that] the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. NIV 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. DBY 9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. NIV 9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. DBY 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. NIV 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. DBY 11 Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not the spirit of thy holiness from me. NIV 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. DBY 12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and let a willing spirit sustain me. NIV 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. DBY 13 I will teach transgressors thy ways, and sinners shall return unto thee. NIV 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you. DBY 14 Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. NIV 14 Save me from bloodguilt, O God, the God who saves me, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. DBY 15 Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare thy praise. NIV 15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. DBY 16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou hast no pleasure in burnt-offering. NIV 16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. DBY 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. NIV 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. DBY 18 Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion; build the walls of Jerusalem. NIV 18 In your good pleasure make Zion prosper; build up the walls of Jerusalem. DBY 19 Then shalt thou have sacrifices of righteousness, burnt-offering, and whole burnt-offering; then shall they offer up bullocks upon thine altar. NIV 19 Then there will be righteous sacrifices, whole burnt offerings to delight you; then bulls will be offered on your altar.
