HNV 1 <<For the Chief Musician. To the tune "Lilies." By David.>> Save me, God, For the waters have come up to my neck! NIV 1 Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck. HNV 2 I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold. I have come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me. NIV 2 I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me. HNV 3 I am weary with my crying. My throat is dry. My eyes fail, looking for my God. NIV 3 I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God. HNV 4 Those who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head. Those who want to cut me off, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty. I have to restore what I didn't take away. NIV 4 Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal. HNV 5 God, you know my foolishness. My sins aren't hidden from you. NIV 5 You know my folly, O God; my guilt is not hidden from you. HNV 6 Don't let those who wait for you be put to shame through me, Lord GOD of Hosts. Don't let those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, God of Yisra'el. NIV 6 May those who hope in you not be disgraced because of me, O Lord, the LORD Almighty; may those who seek you not be put to shame because of me, O God of Israel. HNV 7 Because for your sake, I have borne reproach. Shame has covered my face. NIV 7 For I endure scorn for your sake, and shame covers my face. HNV 8 I have become a stranger to my brothers, An alien to my mother's children. NIV 8 I am a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my own mother's sons; HNV 9 For the zeal of your house consumes me. The reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me. NIV 9 for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me. HNV 10 When I wept and I fasted, That was to my reproach. NIV 10 When I weep and fast, I must endure scorn; HNV 11 When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them. NIV 11 when I put on sackcloth, people make sport of me. HNV 12 Those who sit in the gate talk about me. I am the song of the drunkards. NIV 12 Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of the drunkards. HNV 13 But as for me, my prayer is to you, LORD, in an acceptable time. God, in the abundance of your lovingkindness, answer me in the truth of your salvation. NIV 13 But I pray to you, O LORD, in the time of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation. HNV 14 Deliver me out of the mire, and don't let me sink. Let me be delivered from those who hate me, and out of the deep waters. NIV 14 Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters. HNV 15 Don't let the flood waters overwhelm me, Neither let the deep swallow me up. Don't let the pit shut its mouth on me. NIV 15 Do not let the floodwaters engulf me or the depths swallow me up or the pit close its mouth over me. HNV 16 Answer me, LORD, for your lovingkindness is good. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, turn to me. NIV 16 Answer me, O LORD, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me. HNV 17 Don't hide your face from your servant, For I am in distress. Answer me speedily! NIV 17 Do not hide your face from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in trouble. HNV 18 Draw near to my soul, and redeem it. Ransom me because of my enemies. NIV 18 Come near and rescue me; redeem me because of my foes. HNV 19 You know my reproach, my shame, and my dishonor. My adversaries are all before you. NIV 19 You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed; all my enemies are before you. HNV 20 Reproach has broken my heart, and I am full of heaviness. I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; For comforters, but I found none. NIV 20 Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none. HNV 21 They also gave me gall for my food. In my thirst, they gave me vinegar to drink. NIV 21 They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst. HNV 22 Let their table before them become a snare. May it become a retribution and a trap. NIV 22 May the table set before them become a snare; may it become retribution and a trap. HNV 23 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they can't see. Make their loins continually to shake. NIV 23 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever. HNV 24 Pour out your indignation on them. Let the fierceness of your anger overtake them. NIV 24 Pour out your wrath on them; let your fierce anger overtake them. HNV 25 Let their habitation be desolate. Let no one dwell in their tents. NIV 25 May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents. HNV 26 For they persecute him whom you have wounded. They tell of the sorrow of those whom you have hurt. NIV 26 For they persecute those you wound and talk about the pain of those you hurt. HNV 27 Charge them with crime upon crime. Don't let them come into your righteousness. NIV 27 Charge them with crime upon crime; do not let them share in your salvation. HNV 28 Let them be blotted out of the book of life, And not be written with the righteous. NIV 28 May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous. HNV 29 But I am in pain and distress. Let your yeshu`ah, God, protect me. NIV 29 I am in pain and distress; may your salvation, O God, protect me. HNV 30 I will praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify him with thanksgiving. NIV 30 I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving. HNV 31 It will please the LORD better than an ox, Or a bull that has horns and hoofs. NIV 31 This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hoofs. HNV 32 The humble have seen it, and are glad. You who seek after God, let your heart live. NIV 32 The poor will see and be glad-- you who seek God, may your hearts live! HNV 33 For the LORD hears the needy, And doesn't despise his captive people. NIV 33 The LORD hears the needy and does not despise his captive people. HNV 34 Let heaven and eretz praise him; The seas, and everything that moves therein! NIV 34 Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and all that move in them, HNV 35 For God will save Tziyon, and build the cities of Yehudah. They shall settle there, and own it. NIV 35 for God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. Then people will settle there and possess it; HNV 36 The children also of his servants shall inherit it. Those who love his name shall dwell therein. NIV 36 the children of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell there.
