Psalm 73

ESV 1 Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. NIV 1 Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. ESV 2 But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. NIV 2 But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold. ESV 3 For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. NIV 3 For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. ESV 4 For they have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek. NIV 4 They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. ESV 5 They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind. NIV 5 They are free from the burdens common to man; they are not plagued by human ills. ESV 6 Therefore pride is their necklace; violence covers them as a garment. NIV 6 Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence. ESV 7 Their eyes swell out through fatness; their hearts overflow with follies. NIV 7 From their callous hearts comes iniquity; the evil conceits of their minds know no limits. ESV 8 They scoff and speak with malice; loftily they threaten oppression. NIV 8 They scoff, and speak with malice; in their arrogance they threaten oppression. ESV 9 They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue struts through the earth. NIV 9 Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth. ESV 10 Therefore his people turn back to them, and find no fault in them. NIV 10 Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance. ESV 11 And they say, "How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?" NIV 11 They say, "How can God know? Does the Most High have knowledge?" ESV 12 Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches. NIV 12 This is what the wicked are like-- always carefree, they increase in wealth. ESV 13 All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence. NIV 13 Surely in vain have I kept my heart pure; in vain have I washed my hands in innocence. ESV 14 For all the day long I have been stricken and rebuked every morning. NIV 14 All day long I have been plagued; I have been punished every morning. ESV 15 If I had said, "I will speak thus," I would have betrayed the generation of your children. NIV 15 If I had said, "I will speak thus," I would have betrayed your children. ESV 16 But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, NIV 16 When I tried to understand all this, it was oppressive to me ESV 17 until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end. NIV 17 till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny. ESV 18 Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin. NIV 18 Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin. ESV 19 How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors! NIV 19 How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors! ESV 20 Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms. NIV 20 As a dream when one awakes, so when you arise, O Lord, you will despise them as fantasies. ESV 21 When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart, NIV 21 When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, ESV 22 I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you. NIV 22 I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you. ESV 23 Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. NIV 23 Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. ESV 24 You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. NIV 24 You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. ESV 25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. NIV 25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. ESV 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. NIV 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. ESV 27 For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you. NIV 27 Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you. ESV 28 But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may tell of all your works. NIV 28 But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.
