Psalm 74

ASV 1 O God, why hast thou cast [us] off for ever? Why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture? NIV 1 Why have you rejected us forever, O God? Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture? ASV 2 Remember thy congregation, which thou hast gotten of old, Which thou hast redeemed to be the tribe of thine inheritance; [And] mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt. NIV 2 Remember the people you purchased of old, the tribe of your inheritance, whom you redeemed-- Mount Zion, where you dwelt. ASV 3 Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual ruins, All the evil that the enemy hath done in the sanctuary. NIV 3 Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins, all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary. ASV 4 Thine adversaries have roared in the midst of thine assembly; They have set up their ensigns for signs. NIV 4 Your foes roared in the place where you met with us; they set up their standards as signs. ASV 5 They seemed as men that lifted up Axes upon a thicket of trees. NIV 5 They behaved like men wielding axes to cut through a thicket of trees. ASV 6 And now all the carved work thereof They break down with hatchet and hammers. NIV 6 They smashed all the carved paneling with their axes and hatchets. ASV 7 They have set thy sanctuary on fire; They have profaned the dwelling-place of thy name [by casting it] to the ground. NIV 7 They burned your sanctuary to the ground; they defiled the dwelling place of your Name. ASV 8 They said in their heart, Let us make havoc of them altogether: They have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land. NIV 8 They said in their hearts, "We will crush them completely!" They burned every place where God was worshiped in the land. ASV 9 We see not our signs: There is no more any prophet; Neither is there among us any that knoweth how long. NIV 9 We are given no miraculous signs; no prophets are left, and none of us knows how long this will be. ASV 10 How long, O God, shall the adversary reproach? Shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever? NIV 10 How long will the enemy mock you, O God? Will the foe revile your name forever? ASV 11 Why drawest thou back thy hand, even thy right hand? [Pluck it] out of thy bosom [and] consume [them]. NIV 11 Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand? Take it from the folds of your garment and destroy them! ASV 12 Yet God is my King of old, Working salvation in the midst of the earth. NIV 12 But you, O God, are my king from of old; you bring salvation upon the earth. ASV 13 Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: Thou brakest the heads of the sea-monsters in the waters. NIV 13 It was you who split open the sea by your power; you broke the heads of the monster in the waters. ASV 14 Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces; Thou gavest him to be food to the people inhabiting the wilderness. NIV 14 It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan and gave him as food to the creatures of the desert. ASV 15 Thou didst cleave fountain and flood: Thou driedst up mighty rivers. NIV 15 It was you who opened up springs and streams; you dried up the ever flowing rivers. ASV 16 The day is thine, the night also is thine: Thou hast prepared the light and the sun. NIV 16 The day is yours, and yours also the night; you established the sun and moon. ASV 17 Thou hast set all the borders of the earth: Thou hast made summer and winter. NIV 17 It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter. ASV 18 Remember this, that the enemy hath reproached, O Jehovah, And that a foolish people hath blasphemed thy name. NIV 18 Remember how the enemy has mocked you, O LORD, how foolish people have reviled your name. ASV 19 Oh deliver not the soul of thy turtle-dove unto the wild beast: Forget not the life of thy poor for ever. NIV 19 Do not hand over the life of your dove to wild beasts; do not forget the lives of your afflicted people forever. ASV 20 Have respect unto the covenant; For the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of violence. NIV 20 Have regard for your covenant, because haunts of violence fill the dark places of the land. ASV 21 Oh let not the oppressed return ashamed: Let the poor and needy praise thy name. NIV 21 Do not let the oppressed retreat in disgrace; may the poor and needy praise your name. ASV 22 Arise, O God, plead thine own cause: Remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee all the day. NIV 22 Rise up, O God, and defend your cause; remember how fools mock you all day long. ASV 23 Forget not the voice of thine adversaries: The tumult of those that rise up against thee ascendeth continually. NIV 23 Do not ignore the clamor of your adversaries, the uproar of your enemies, which rises continually.
