Psalm 89

CJB 1 A maskil of Eitan the Ezrachi: I will sing about ADONAI's acts of grace forever, with my mouth proclaim your faithfulness to all generations; NIV 1 I will sing of the LORD's great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations. CJB 2 because I said, "Grace is built to last forever; in the heavens themselves you established your faithfulness." NIV 2 I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you established your faithfulness in heaven itself. CJB 3 You said, "I made a covenant with the one I chose, I swore to my servant David, NIV 3 You said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant, CJB 4 'I will establish your dynasty forever, build up your throne through all generations.'" (Selah) NIV 4 'I will establish your line forever and make your throne firm through all generations.' " "Selah" CJB 5 Let the heavens praise your wonders, ADONAI, your faithfulness in the assembly of the angels. NIV 5 The heavens praise your wonders, O LORD, your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones. CJB 6 For who in the skies can be compared with ADONAI? Which of these gods can rival ADONAI, NIV 6 For who in the skies above can compare with the LORD? Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings? CJB 7 a God dreaded in the great assembly of the holy ones and feared by all around him? NIV 7 In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him. CJB 8 ADONAI Elohei-Tzva'ot! Who is as mighty as you, Yah? Your faithfulness surrounds you. NIV 8 O LORD God Almighty, who is like you? You are mighty, O LORD, and your faithfulness surrounds you. CJB 9 You control the raging of the sea; when its waves rear up, you calm them. NIV 9 You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up, you still them. CJB 10 You crushed Rahav like a carcass; with your strong arm you scattered your foes. NIV 10 You crushed Rahab like one of the slain; with your strong arm you scattered your enemies. CJB 11 The heavens are yours, and the earth is yours; you founded the world and everything in it. NIV 11 The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth; you founded the world and all that is in it. CJB 14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; grace and truth attend you. NIV 14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you. CJB 15 How happy are the people who know the joyful shout! They walk in the light of your presence, ADONAI. NIV 15 Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, O LORD. CJB 16 They rejoice in your name all day and are lifted up by your righteousness, NIV 16 They rejoice in your name all day long; they exult in your righteousness. CJB 17 for you yourself are the strength in which they glory. Our power grows by pleasing you, NIV 17 For you are their glory and strength, and by your favor you exalt our horn. CJB 18 for our shield comes from ADONAI -our king is from the Holy One of Isra'el. NIV 18 Indeed, our shield belongs to the LORD, our king to the Holy One of Israel. CJB 19 There was a time when you spoke in a vision; you declared to your loyal [prophets], "I have given help to a warrior, I have raised up someone chosen from the people. NIV 19 Once you spoke in a vision, to your faithful people you said: "I have bestowed strength on a warrior; I have exalted a young man from among the people. CJB 20 I have found David my servant and anointed him with my holy oil. NIV 20 I have found David my servant; with my sacred oil I have anointed him. CJB 21 My hand will always be with him, and my arm will give him strength. NIV 21 My hand will sustain him; surely my arm will strengthen him. CJB 22 No enemy will outwit him, no wicked man overcome him. NIV 22 No enemy will subject him to tribute; no wicked man will oppress him. CJB 23 I will crush his foes before him and strike down those who hate him. NIV 23 I will crush his foes before him and strike down his adversaries. CJB 24 My faithfulness and grace will be with him; through my name his power will grow. NIV 24 My faithful love will be with him, and through my name his horn will be exalted. CJB 27 I will give him the position of firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth. NIV 27 I will also appoint him my firstborn, the most exalted of the kings of the earth. CJB 28 I will keep my grace for him forever, and in my covenant be faithful with him. NIV 28 I will maintain my love to him forever, and my covenant with him will never fail. CJB 29 I will establish his dynasty forever, and his throne as long as the heavens last. NIV 29 I will establish his line forever, his throne as long as the heavens endure. CJB 30 "If his descendants abandon my Torah and fail to live by my rulings, NIV 30 "If his sons forsake my law and do not follow my statutes, CJB 31 if they profane my regulations and don't obey my mitzvot, NIV 31 if they violate my decrees and fail to keep my commands, CJB 32 I will punish their disobedience with the rod and their guilt with lashes. NIV 32 I will punish their sin with the rod, their iniquity with flogging; CJB 33 But I won't withdraw my grace from him or be false to my faithfulness. NIV 33 but I will not take my love from him, nor will I ever betray my faithfulness. CJB 34 I will not profane my covenant or change what my lips have spoken. NIV 34 I will not violate my covenant or alter what my lips have uttered. CJB 35 I have sworn by my holiness once and for all; I will not lie to David NIV 35 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness-- and I will not lie to David-- CJB 36 his dynasty will last forever, his throne like the sun before me. NIV 36 that his line will continue forever and his throne endure before me like the sun; CJB 37 It will be established forever, like the moon, which remains a faithful witness in the sky." NIV 38 But you have rejected, you have spurned, you have been very angry with your anointed one. CJB 39 You renounced the covenant with your servant and defiled his crown in the dust. NIV 39 You have renounced the covenant with your servant and have defiled his crown in the dust. CJB 40 You broke through all his defenses and left his strongholds in ruins. NIV 40 You have broken through all his walls and reduced his strongholds to ruins. CJB 41 All who pass by plunder him; he is an object of scorn to his neighbors. NIV 41 All who pass by have plundered him; he has become the scorn of his neighbors. CJB 42 You raised up the right hand of his foes and made all his enemies rejoice. NIV 42 You have exalted the right hand of his foes; you have made all his enemies rejoice. CJB 43 You drive back his drawn sword and fail to support him in battle. NIV 43 You have turned back the edge of his sword and have not supported him in battle. CJB 44 You brought an end to his splendor and hurled his throne to the ground. NIV 44 You have put an end to his splendor and cast his throne to the ground. CJB 45 You cut short the days of his youth and covered him with shame. How long will your fury burn like fire? NIV 46 How long, O LORD? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your wrath burn like fire? CJB 47 Remember how little time I have! Was it for no purpose that you created all humanity? NIV 47 Remember how fleeting is my life. For what futility you have created all men! CJB 48 Who can live and not see death? Who can save himself from the power of the grave? (Selah) NIV 48 What man can live and not see death, or save himself from the power of the grave ? "Selah" CJB 49 Where, Adonai, are the acts of grace you once did, those which, in your faithfulness, you swore to David? NIV 49 O Lord, where is your former great love, which in your faithfulness you swore to David? CJB 50 Remember, Adonai, the taunts hurled at your servants, which I carry in my heart [from] so many peoples! NIV 50 Remember, Lord, how your servant has been mocked, how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the nations, CJB 51 Your enemies, ADONAI, have flung their taunts, flung them in the footsteps of your anointed one. NIV 51 the taunts with which your enemies have mocked, O LORD, with which they have mocked every step of your anointed one. CJB 52 Blessed be ADONAI forever. Amen. Amen.
