Romans 3

CEB 1 So what's the advantage of being a Jew? Or what's the benefit of circumcision? NIV 1 What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? CEB 2 Plenty in every way. First of all, the Jews were trusted with God's revelations. NIV 2 Much in every way! First of all, they have been entrusted with the very words of God. CEB 3 What does it matter, then, if some weren't faithful? Their lack of faith won't cancel God's faithfulness, will it? NIV 3 What if some did not have faith? Will their lack of faith nullify God's faithfulness? CEB 4 Absolutely not! God must be true, even if every human being is a liar, as it is written: So that it can show that you are right in your words; and you will triumph when you are judged. NIV 4 Not at all! Let God be true, and every man a liar. As it is written: "So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge." CEB 5 But if our lack of righteousness confirms God's justice, what will we say? That God, who brings wrath upon us, isn't just (I'm speaking rhetorically)? NIV 5 But if our unrighteousness brings out God's righteousness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument.) CEB 6 Absolutely not! If God weren't just, how could he judge the world? NIV 6 Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world? CEB 7 But if God's truth is demonstrated by my lie and it increases his glory, why am I still judged as a sinner? NIV 7 Someone might argue, "If my falsehood enhances God's truthfulness and so increases his glory, why am I still condemned as a sinner?" CEB 8 Why not say, "Let's do evil things so that good things will come out of it"? (Some people who slander us accuse us of saying that, but these people deserve criticism.) NIV 8 Why not say--as we are being slanderously reported as saying and as some claim that we say--"Let us do evil that good may result"? Their condemnation is deserved. CEB 9 So what are we saying? Are we better off? Not at all. We have already stated the charge: both Jews and Greeks are all under the power of sin. NIV 9 What shall we conclude then? Are we any better ? Not at all! We have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under sin. CEB 10 As it is written, There is no righteous person, not even one. NIV 10 As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one; CEB 11 There is no one who understands. There is no one who looks for God. NIV 11 there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. CEB 12 They all turned away. They have become worthless together. There is no one who shows kindness. There is not even one. NIV 12 All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one." CEB 13 Their throat is a grave that has been opened. They are deceitful with their tongues, and the poison of vipers is under their lips. NIV 13 "Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit." "The poison of vipers is on their lips." CEB 14 Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. NIV 14 "Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness." CEB 15 Their feet are quick to shed blood; NIV 15 "Their feet are swift to shed blood; CEB 16 destruction and misery are in their ways; NIV 16 ruin and misery mark their ways, CEB 17 and they don't know the way of peace. NIV 17 and the way of peace they do not know." CEB 18 There is no fear of God in their view of the world. NIV 18 "There is no fear of God before their eyes." CEB 19 Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, in order to shut every mouth and make it so the whole world has to answer to God. NIV 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. CEB 20 It follows that no human being will be treated as righteous in his presence by doing what the Law says, because the knowledge of sin comes through the Law. NIV 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. CEB 21 But now God's righteousness has been revealed apart from the Law, which is confirmed by the Law and the Prophets. NIV 21 But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. CEB 22 God's righteousness comes through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all who have faith in him. There's no distinction. NIV 22 This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, CEB 23 All have sinned and fall short of God's glory, NIV 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, CEB 24 but all are treated as righteous freely by his grace because of a ransom that was paid by Christ Jesus. NIV 24 and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. CEB 25 Through his faithfulness, God displayed Jesus as the place of sacrifice where mercy is found by means of his blood. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness in passing over sins that happened before, NIV 25 God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished-- CEB 26 during the time of God's patient tolerance. He also did this to demonstrate that he is righteous in the present time, and to treat the one who has faith in Jesus as righteous. NIV 26 he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. CEB 27 What happens to our bragging? It's thrown out. With which law? With what we have accomplished under the Law? NIV 27 Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of observing the law? No, but on that of faith. CEB 28 No, not at all, but through the law of faith. We consider that a person is treated as righteous by faith, apart from what is accomplished under the Law. NIV 28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law. CEB 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Isn't God the God of Gentiles also? Yes, God is also the God of Gentiles. NIV 29 Is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, CEB 30 Since God is one, then the one who makes the circumcised righteous by faith will also make the one who isn't circumcised righteous through faith. NIV 30 since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. CEB 31 Do we then cancel the Law through this faith? Absolutely not! Instead, we confirm the Law. NIV 31 Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.
