Romans 9:1-29

BBE 1 I say what is true in Christ, and not what is false, my mind giving witness with me in the Holy Spirit, NIV 1 I speak the truth in Christ--I am not lying, my conscience confirms it in the Holy Spirit-- BBE 2 That I am full of sorrow and pain without end. NIV 2 I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. BBE 3 For I have a desire to take on myself the curse for my brothers, my family in the flesh: NIV 3 For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, those of my own race, BBE 4 Who are Israelites: who have the place of sons, and the glory, and the agreements with God, and the giving of the law, and the worship, and the hope offered by God: NIV 4 the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption as sons; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises. BBE 5 Whose are the fathers, and of whom came Christ in the flesh, who is over all, God, to whom be blessing for ever. So be it. NIV 5 Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen. BBE 6 But it is not as if the word of God was without effect. For they are not all Israel, who are of Israel: NIV 6 It is not as though God's word had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. BBE 7 And they are not all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but, In Isaac will your seed be named. NIV 7 Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham's children. On the contrary, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned." BBE 8 That is, it is not the children of the flesh, but the children of God's undertaking, who are named as the seed. NIV 8 In other words, it is not the natural children who are God's children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham's offspring. BBE 9 For this is the word of God's undertaking, At this time will I come, and Sarah will have a son. NIV 9 For this was how the promise was stated: "At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son." BBE 10 And not only so, but Rebecca being about to have a child by our father Isaac-- NIV 10 Not only that, but Rebekah's children had one and the same father, our father Isaac. BBE 11 Before the children had come into existence, or had done anything good or bad, in order that God's purpose and his selection might be effected, not by works, but by him whose purpose it is, NIV 11 Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad--in order that God's purpose in election might stand: BBE 12 It was said to her, The older will be the servant of the younger. NIV 12 not by works but by him who calls--she was told, "The older will serve the younger." BBE 13 Even as it is said, I had love for Jacob, but for Esau I had hate. NIV 13 Just as it is written: "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated." BBE 14 What may we say then? is God not upright? let it not be said. NIV 14 What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! BBE 15 For he says to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and pity on whom I will have pity. NIV 15 For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." BBE 16 So then, it is not by the desire or by the attempt of man, but by the mercy of God. NIV 16 It does not, therefore, depend on man's desire or effort, but on God's mercy. BBE 17 For the holy Writings say to Pharaoh, For this same purpose did I put you on high, so that I might make my power seen in you, and that there might be knowledge of my name through all the earth. NIV 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: "I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth." BBE 18 So then, at his pleasure he has mercy on a man, and at his pleasure he makes the heart hard. NIV 18 Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden. BBE 19 But you will say to me, Why does he still make us responsible? who is able to go against his purpose? NIV 19 One of you will say to me: "Then why does God still blame us? For who resists his will?" BBE 20 But, O man, who are you, to make answer against God? May the thing which is made say to him who made it, Why did you make me so? NIV 20 But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? "Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, 'Why did you make me like this?' " BBE 21 Or has not the potter the right to make out of one part of his earth a vessel for honour, and out of another a vessel for shame? NIV 21 Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use? BBE 22 What if God, desiring to let his wrath and his power be seen, for a long time put up with the vessels of wrath which were ready for destruction: NIV 22 What if God, choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath--prepared for destruction? BBE 23 And to make clear the wealth of his glory to vessels of mercy, which he had before made ready for glory, NIV 23 What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory-- BBE 24 Even us, who were marked out by him, not only from the Jews, but from the Gentiles? NIV 24 even us, whom he also called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles? BBE 25 As he says in Hosea, They will be named my people who were not my people, and she will be loved who was not loved. NIV 25 As he says in Hosea: "I will call them 'my people' who are not my people; and I will call her 'my loved one' who is not my loved one," BBE 26 And in the place where it was said to them, You are not my people, there they will be named the sons of the living God. NIV 26 and, "It will happen that in the very place where it was said to them, 'You are not my people,' they will be called 'sons of the living God.' " BBE 27 And Isaiah says about Israel, Even if the number of the children of Israel is as the sand of the sea, only a small part will get salvation: NIV 27 Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: "Though the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea, only the remnant will be saved. BBE 28 For the Lord will give effect to his word on the earth, putting an end to it and cutting it short. NIV 28 For the Lord will carry out his sentence on earth with speed and finality." BBE 29 And, as Isaiah had said before, If the Lord of armies had not given us a seed, we would have been like Sodom and Gomorrah. NIV 29 It is just as Isaiah said previously: "Unless the Lord Almighty had left us descendants, we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah."
