Song of Solomon 8

GW 1 If only you were my brother, one who nursed at my mother's breasts. If I saw you on the street, I would kiss you, and no one would look down on me. NIV 1 If only you were to me like a brother, who was nursed at my mother's breasts! Then, if I found you outside, I would kiss you, and no one would despise me. GW 2 I would lead you. I would bring you into my mother's house. (She is the one who was my teacher.) I would give you some spiced wine to drink, some juice squeezed from my pomegranates. NIV 2 I would lead you and bring you to my mother's house-- she who has taught me. I would give you spiced wine to drink, the nectar of my pomegranates. GW 3 His left hand is under my head. His right hand caresses me. NIV 3 His left arm is under my head and his right arm embraces me. GW 4 Young women of Jerusalem, swear to me that you will not awaken love or arouse love before its proper time! NIV 4 Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you: Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires. GW 5 Who is this young woman coming from the wilderness with her arm around her beloved? Under the apple tree I woke you up. There your mother went into labor with you. There she went into labor and gave birth to you! NIV 5 Who is this coming up from the desert leaning on her lover? Under the apple tree I roused you; there your mother conceived you, there she who was in labor gave you birth. GW 6 Wear me as a signet ring on your heart, as a ring on your hand. Love is as overpowering as death. Devotion is as unyielding as the grave. Love's flames are flames of fire, flames that come from the LORD. NIV 6 Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. GW 7 Raging water cannot extinguish love, and rivers will never wash it away. If a man exchanged all his family's wealth for love, people would utterly despise him. NIV 7 Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away. If one were to give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be utterly scorned. GW 8 We have a little sister, and she has no breasts. What will we do for our sister on the day she becomes engaged? NIV 8 We have a young sister, and her breasts are not yet grown. What shall we do for our sister for the day she is spoken for? GW 9 If she is a wall, we will build a silver barrier around her. If she is a door, we will barricade her with cedar boards. NIV 9 If she is a wall, we will build towers of silver on her. If she is a door, we will enclose her with panels of cedar. GW 10 I am a wall, and my breasts are like towers. So he considers me to be one who has found peace. NIV 10 I am a wall, and my breasts are like towers. Thus I have become in his eyes like one bringing contentment. GW 11 Solomon had a vineyard at Baal Hamon. He entrusted that vineyard to caretakers. Each one was to bring 25 pounds of silver in exchange for its fruit. NIV 11 Solomon had a vineyard in Baal Hamon; he let out his vineyard to tenants. Each was to bring for its fruit a thousand shekels of silver. GW 12 My own vineyard is in front of me. That 25 pounds is yours, Solomon, and 5 pounds go to those who take care of its fruit. NIV 12 But my own vineyard is mine to give; the thousand shekels are for you, O Solomon, and two hundred are for those who tend its fruit. GW 13 Young woman living in the gardens, while your friends are listening to your voice, let me hear. . . . NIV 13 You who dwell in the gardens with friends in attendance, let me hear your voice! GW 14 Come away quickly, my beloved. Run like a gazelle or a young stag on the mountains of spices. NIV 14 Come away, my lover, and be like a gazelle or like a young stag on the spice-laden mountains.
