1 Maná y codornices del cielo<br />Después, toda la comunidad de Israel partió de Elim y viajó al desierto de Sin, ubicado entre Elim y el monte Sinaí. Llegaron el día quince del segundo mes, un mes después de salir de la tierra de Egipto.

The whole Israelite community set out from Elim and came to the Desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had come out of Egypt.
2 Allí también toda la comunidad de Israel se quejó de Moisés y Aarón.

In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron.
3 «¡Si tan solo el Señor<br /> nos hubiera matado en Egipto! —protestaban—. Allá nos sentábamos junto a las ollas llenas de carne y comíamos todo el pan que se nos antojaba; pero ahora tú nos has traído a este desierto para matarnos de hambre».

The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the LORD’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”
4 Entonces el Señor<br /> le dijo a Moisés: «Mira, haré llover alimento del cielo para ustedes. Cada día la gente podrá salir a recoger todo el alimento necesario para ese día. Con esto los pondré a prueba para ver si siguen o no mis instrucciones.

Then the LORD said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.
5 El sexto día juntarán el alimento y cuando preparen la comida habrá el doble de lo normal».

On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days.”
6 Entonces Moisés y Aarón dijeron a todos los israelitas: «Antes de anochecer, sabrán que fue el Señor<br /> quien los sacó de la tierra de Egipto.

So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening you will know that it was the LORD who brought you out of Egypt,
7 Por la mañana, verán la gloria del Señor<br />, porque él oyó las quejas de ustedes, que son contra él y no contra nosotros. ¿Qué hemos hecho para que ustedes se quejen de nosotros?».

and in the morning you will see the glory of the LORD, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we, that you should grumble against us?”
8 Luego Moisés añadió: «El Señor<br /> les dará de comer carne por la tarde y los saciará con pan por la mañana, porque él oyó todas sus quejas contra él. ¿Qué hemos hecho nosotros? Así es, las quejas de ustedes son contra el Señor<br />, no contra nosotros».

Moses also said, “You will know that it was the LORD when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the LORD.”
9 Después Moisés le dijo a Aarón: «Anuncia lo siguiente a toda la comunidad de Israel: “Preséntense ante el Señor<br />, porque él ha oído sus quejas”».

Then Moses told Aaron, “Say to the entire Israelite community, ‘Come before the LORD, for he has heard your grumbling.’ ”
10 Mientras Aarón hablaba a toda la comunidad de Israel, miraron hacia el desierto, y allí pudieron ver la imponente gloria del Señor<br /> en la nube.

While Aaron was speaking to the whole Israelite community, they looked toward the desert, and there was the glory of the LORD appearing in the cloud.
11 Luego el Señor<br /> le dijo a Moisés:

The LORD said to Moses,
12 «He oído las quejas de los israelitas. Ahora diles: “Por la tarde tendrán carne para comer, y por la mañana tendrán todo el pan que deseen. Así ustedes sabrán que yo soy el Señor<br /> su Dios”».

“I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them, ‘At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God.’ ”
13 Esa tarde, llegó una cantidad enorme de codornices que cubrieron el campamento, y a la mañana siguiente los alrededores del campamento estaban húmedos de rocío.

That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp.
14 Cuando el rocío se evaporó, la superficie del desierto quedó cubierta por copos de una sustancia hojaldrada y fina como escarcha.

When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the ground appeared on the desert floor.
15 Los israelitas quedaron perplejos al ver eso y se preguntaban unos a otros: «¿Qué es esto?», porque no tenían idea de lo que era.<br />Entonces Moisés les dijo:«Este es el pan que el Señor<br /> les da para comer.

When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, “It is the bread the LORD has given you to eat.
16 Estas son las instrucciones del Señor<br />: cada grupo familiar juntará todo lo que necesite. Recojan dos kilos<br /> por cada persona en su carpa».

This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Everyone is to gather as much as they need. Take an omer for each person you have in your tent.’ ”
17 Así que los israelitas hicieron lo que se les dijo. Algunos recogieron mucho; otros, solo un poco.

The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little.
18 Pero cuando lo midieron,<br /> cada uno tenía lo justo y necesario. A los que recogieron mucho no les sobraba, y a los que recogieron poco no les faltaba. Cada familia tuvo justo lo que necesitaba.

And when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed.
19 Entonces Moisés les dijo: «No guarden nada para el día siguiente».

Then Moses said to them, “No one is to keep any of it until morning.”
20 Sin embargo, algunos no hicieron caso y guardaron un poco hasta la mañana siguiente; pero para entonces se había llenado de gusanos y apestaba, y Moisés se enojó mucho con ellos.

However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell. So Moses was angry with them.
21 Después de este incidente, cada familia recogía el alimento cada mañana, conforme a su necesidad. Cuando el sol calentaba, los copos que no se habían recogido se derretían y desaparecían.

Each morning everyone gathered as much as they needed, and when the sun grew hot, it melted away.
22 El sexto día recogían el doble de lo habitual, es decir, cuatro kilos<br /> por persona en lugar de dos. Entonces todos los líderes de la comunidad se dirigieron a Moisés en busca de una explicación.

On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much—two omers for each person—and the leaders of the community came and reported this to Moses.
23 Él les dijo: «Esto es lo que el Señor<br /> ha ordenado: “Mañana será un día de descanso absoluto, un día sagrado de descanso, reservado para el Señor<br />. Así que horneen o hiervan hoy todo lo que necesiten y guarden para mañana lo que les sobre”».

He said to them, “This is what the LORD commanded: ‘Tomorrow is to be a day of sabbath rest, a holy sabbath to the LORD. So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning.’ ”
24 Entonces ellos dejaron un poco aparte para el día siguiente, tal como Moisés había ordenado. Al otro día la comida sobrante estaba buena y saludable, sin gusanos ni mal olor.

So they saved it until morning, as Moses commanded, and it did not stink or get maggots in it.
25 Así que Moisés dijo: «Coman este alimento hoy, porque es el día de descanso, dedicado al Señor<br />. Hoy no habrá alimento en el campo para recoger.

“Eat it today,” Moses said, “because today is a sabbath to the LORD. You will not find any of it on the ground today.
26 Durante seis días se les permite recoger alimento, pero el séptimo día es el día de descanso; ese día no habrá alimento en el campo».

Six days you are to gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will not be any.”
27 Aun así, algunas personas salieron a recoger el día séptimo, pero no encontraron alimento.

Nevertheless, some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather it, but they found none.
28 Entonces el Señor<br /> le preguntó a Moisés: «¿Hasta cuándo este pueblo se negará a obedecer mis mandatos y mis instrucciones?

Then the LORD said to Moses, “How long will you refuse to keep my commands and my instructions?
29 Tienen que entender que el día de descanso es un regalo del Señor<br /> para ustedes. Por eso él les provee doble cantidad de alimento el sexto día, a fin de que tengan suficiente para dos días. El día de descanso, todos deben quedarse en el lugar donde estén; no salgan a buscar pan el séptimo día».

Bear in mind that the LORD has given you the Sabbath; that is why on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Everyone is to stay where they are on the seventh day; no one is to go out.”
30 Así que la gente no recogió alimento el día séptimo.

So the people rested on the seventh day.
31 Los israelitas llamaron maná<br /> al alimento. Era blanco como la semilla de cilantro, y tenía un gusto parecido a obleas con miel.

The people of Israel called the bread manna. It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey.
32 Luego Moisés dijo: «Esto es lo que el Señor<br /> ha ordenado: “Llenen un recipiente con dos kilos de maná y consérvenlo para sus descendientes. Así las generaciones futuras podrán ver el pan que les di a ustedes en el desierto cuando los liberé de Egipto”».

Moses said, “This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Take an omer of manna and keep it for the generations to come, so they can see the bread I gave you to eat in the wilderness when I brought you out of Egypt.’ ”
33 Entonces Moisés le dijo a Aarón: «Toma una vasija y llénala con dos kilos de maná. Después colócala en un lugar sagrado, delante del Señor<br />, a fin de conservarlo para todas las generaciones futuras».

So Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar and put an omer of manna in it. Then place it before the LORD to be kept for the generations to come.”
34 Así que Aarón hizo tal como el Señor<br /> le ordenó a Moisés. Posteriormente lo colocó dentro del arca del pacto,<br /> frente a las tablas de piedra grabadas con las condiciones del pacto.

As the LORD commanded Moses, Aaron put the manna with the tablets of the covenant law, so that it might be preserved.
35 Y los israelitas comieron maná durante cuarenta años, hasta que llegaron a la tierra donde se establecerían. Comieron maná hasta que llegaron a la frontera de la tierra de Canaán.

The Israelites ate manna forty years, until they came to a land that was settled; they ate manna until they reached the border of Canaan.
36 (El recipiente utilizado para medir el maná era un gómer, que era la décima parte de un efa; equivalía a dos kilos).

(An omer is one-tenth of an ephah.)
