2 »Si se sorprende a un ladrón en el acto de forzar la entrada a una casa y, durante el enfrentamiento, se le mata a golpes, la persona que mató al ladrón no es culpable de asesinato.

3 Pero si sucede a la luz del día, el que mató al ladrón sí es culpable de asesinato.<br />»El ladrón que sea capturado pagará la cantidad total de lo que haya robado. Si no puede pagar, se venderá como esclavo para pagar por lo robado.

4 Si alguien roba un buey o un burro o una oveja, y se encuentra el animal en su poder, entonces el ladrón tendrá que pagar el doble del valor del animal robado.

5 »Si un animal pasta en un campo o en un viñedo, y el dueño deja que se meta a pastar en el campo de otro, el dueño del animal tendrá que compensar al dueño del campo con lo mejor de su cosecha de grano o de uvas.

6 »Si alguien prende fuego a espinos y el fuego se sale de control y se extiende al campo de un vecino, y por lo tanto, destruye las gavillas de grano o lo que está por cosecharse o todos los cultivos, el que encendió el fuego tendrá que pagar por la cosecha perdida.

7 »Supongamos que alguien entrega dinero o bienes a un vecino para que se los guarde en un lugar seguro, y al vecino se los roban de su casa. Si se atrapa al ladrón, la compensación consistirá en el doble del valor de lo robado.

8 Pero si no se encuentra al ladrón, el vecino tendrá que presentarse ante Dios, y él determinará<br /> si el vecino es quien robó los bienes.

9 »Supongamos que hay un pleito entre dos personas, y ambas afirman ser dueñas de cierto buey o burro, cierta oveja o prenda de vestir, o algún objeto perdido. Ambas partes tendrán que presentarse ante Dios, y la persona a quien Dios declare<br /> culpable tendrá que pagarle el doble al otro.

10 »Ahora supongamos que alguien deja un burro, un buey, una oveja o cualquier otro animal al cuidado de otra persona, pero el animal muere, se lastima o se extravía, y nadie vio lo sucedido.

11 Entonces el vecino tendrá que hacer un juramento en presencia del Señor<br />. Si el Señor<br /> confirma que el vecino no robó el animal, el dueño deberá aceptar el veredicto, y no se exigirá ningún pago;

12 pero si efectivamente el animal fue robado, el culpable deberá compensar al dueño.

13 Si un animal salvaje lo despedazó, los restos del animal muerto se presentarán como prueba, y no se exigirá ninguna compensación.

14 »Si alguien pide prestado un animal a un vecino, y el animal se lastima o muere en ausencia del dueño, el que lo pidió prestado tendrá que compensar al dueño en forma total y absoluta;

15 pero si el dueño estaba presente, no se exigirá ninguna compensación. Si el animal fue alquilado, tampoco se exigirá ninguna compensación, porque los posibles daños están incluidos en el alquiler.

16 Responsabilidad social<br />»Si un hombre seduce a una mujer virgen que no está comprometida y tiene sexo con ella, tendrá que pagar a la familia de la mujer la cantidad acostumbrada por una virgen y casarse con ella.

17 Aun si el padre se niega a que él se case con ella, el hombre tendrá que pagar una cantidad igual al precio que se acostumbra pagar por una virgen.

18 »No dejes con vida a las hechiceras.

19 »Cualquiera que tenga relaciones sexuales con un animal será ejecutado.

20 »Cualquiera que ofrezca sacrificios a un dios que no sea el Señor<br />, tendrá que ser destruido.

21 »No maltrates ni oprimas a los extranjeros en ninguna forma. Recuerda que tú también fuiste extranjero en la tierra de Egipto.

22 »No explotes a la viuda ni al huérfano.

23 Si los explotas de alguna manera y ellos claman a mí, ten por seguro que oiré su clamor.

24 Mi enojo se encenderá contra ti y te mataré a filo de espada. Entonces tus esposas serán las viudas y tus hijos los huérfanos.

25 »Si prestas dinero a cualquiera de mi pueblo que pase necesidad, no le cobres interés como acostumbran hacer los prestamistas.

26 Si tomas el abrigo de tu prójimo como garantía por un préstamo, se lo devolverás antes de la puesta del sol.

27 Puede ser que este abrigo sea la única manta que tiene para abrigarse. ¿Cómo podrá dormir sin abrigo? Si no se lo devuelves y tu prójimo clama a mí por ayuda, yo lo oiré, porque soy misericordioso.

28 »No deshonres a Dios ni insultes a ninguno de tus gobernantes.

29 »No retengas nada cuando me entregues las ofrendas de tus cosechas y de tu vino.<br />»Deberás darme a tu primer hijo varón.

30 »También tienes que entregarme las primeras crías de tu ganado, de tus ovejas y de tus cabras. Dejarás la nueva cría con su madre durante siete días y al octavo día me la entregarás.

31 »Ustedes tienen que ser mi pueblo santo. Por eso, no coman ningún animal que haya sido muerto y despedazado por animales salvajes. Échenselo a los perros.

1 “Whoever steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it must pay back five head of cattle for the ox and four sheep for the sheep.

2 “If a thief is caught breaking in at night and is struck a fatal blow, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed;

3 but if it happens after sunrise, the defender is guilty of bloodshed. “Anyone who steals must certainly make restitution, but if they have nothing, they must be sold to pay for their theft.

4 If the stolen animal is found alive in their possession—whether ox or donkey or sheep—they must pay back double.

5 “If anyone grazes their livestock in a field or vineyard and lets them stray and they graze in someone else’s field, the offender must make restitution from the best of their own field or vineyard.

6 “If a fire breaks out and spreads into thornbushes so that it burns shocks of grain or standing grain or the whole field, the one who started the fire must make restitution.

7 “If anyone gives a neighbor silver or goods for safekeeping and they are stolen from the neighbor’s house, the thief, if caught, must pay back double.

8 But if the thief is not found, the owner of the house must appear before the judges, and they must determine whether the owner of the house has laid hands on the other person’s property.

9 In all cases of illegal possession of an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any other lost property about which somebody says, ‘This is mine,’ both parties are to bring their cases before the judges. The one whom the judges declare guilty must pay back double to the other.

10 “If anyone gives a donkey, an ox, a sheep or any other animal to their neighbor for safekeeping and it dies or is injured or is taken away while no one is looking,

11 the issue between them will be settled by the taking of an oath before the LORD that the neighbor did not lay hands on the other person’s property. The owner is to accept this, and no restitution is required.

12 But if the animal was stolen from the neighbor, restitution must be made to the owner.

13 If it was torn to pieces by a wild animal, the neighbor shall bring in the remains as evidence and shall not be required to pay for the torn animal.

14 “If anyone borrows an animal from their neighbor and it is injured or dies while the owner is not present, they must make restitution.

15 But if the owner is with the animal, the borrower will not have to pay. If the animal was hired, the money paid for the hire covers the loss.

16 “If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged to be married and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride-price, and she shall be his wife.

17 If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, he must still pay the bride-price for virgins.

18 “Do not allow a sorceress to live.

19 “Anyone who has sexual relations with an animal is to be put to death.

20 “Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the LORD must be destroyed.

21 “Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt.

22 “Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless.

23 If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.

24 My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless.

25 “If you lend money to one of my people among you who is needy, do not treat it like a business deal; charge no interest.

26 If you take your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge, return it by sunset,

27 because that cloak is the only covering your neighbor has. What else can they sleep in? When they cry out to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.

28 “Do not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people.

29 “Do not hold back offerings from your granaries or your vats.“You must give me the firstborn of your sons.

30 Do the same with your cattle and your sheep. Let them stay with their mothers for seven days, but give them to me on the eighth day.

31 “You are to be my holy people. So do not eat the meat of an animal torn by wild beasts; throw it to the dogs.
