I will send foreigners1 to Babylon to winnow2 her and to devastate her land; they will oppose her on every side in the day3 of her disaster.
Let not the archer string his bow,4 nor let him put on his armor.5 Do not spare her young men; completely destroya her army.
They will fall6 down slain in Babylon,b fatally wounded in her streets.75
For Israel and Judah have not been forsaken8 by their God, the LORD Almighty, though their landc is full of guilt9 before the Holy One of Israel.
"Flee10 from Babylon! Run for your lives! Do not be destroyed because of her sins.11 It is time12 for the LORD's vengeance;13 he will pay14 her what she deserves.
Babylon was a gold cup15 in the LORD's hand; she made the whole earth drunk. The nations drank her wine; therefore they have now gone mad.
Babylon will suddenly fall16 and be broken. Wail over her! Get balm17 for her pain; perhaps she can be healed.
" 'We would have healed Babylon, but she cannot be healed; let us leave18 her and each go to his own land, for her judgment19 reaches to the skies, it rises as high as the clouds.'
" 'The LORD has vindicated20 us; come, let us tell in Zion what the LORD our God has done.'2111
"Sharpen the arrows,22 take up the shields!23 The LORD has stirred up the kings24 of the Medes,25 because his purpose26 is to destroy Babylon. The LORD will take vengeance,27 vengeance for his temple.2812
Lift up a banner29 against the walls of Babylon! Reinforce the guard, station the watchmen,30 prepare an ambush!31 The LORD will carry out his purpose,32 his decree against the people of Babylon.
You who live by many waters33 and are rich in treasures,34 your end has come, the time for you to be cut off.3514
The LORD Almighty has sworn by himself:36 I will surely fill you with men, as with a swarm of locusts,37 and they will shout38 in triumph over you.
"He made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom39 and stretched40 out the heavens by his understanding.4116
When he thunders,42 the waters in the heavens roar; he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He sends lightning with the rain43 and brings out the wind from his storehouses.4417
"Every man is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by his idols. His images are a fraud;45 they have no breath in them.
They are worthless,46 the objects of mockery; when their judgment comes, they will perish.
He who is the Portion47 of Jacob is not like these, for he is the Maker of all things, including the tribe of his inheritance48-- the LORD Almighty is his name.
"You are my war club,49 my weapon for battle-- with you I shatter50 nations,51 with you I destroy kingdoms,
with you I shatter horse and rider,52 with you I shatter chariot53 and driver,
with you I shatter man and woman, with you I shatter old man and youth, with you I shatter young man and maiden,5423
with you I shatter shepherd and flock, with you I shatter farmer and oxen, with you I shatter governors and officials.5524
"Before your eyes I will repay56 Babylon57 and all who live in Babyloniad for all the wrong they have done in Zion," declares the LORD.
"I am against58 you, O destroying mountain, you who destroy the whole earth,"59 declares the LORD. "I will stretch out my hand60 against you, roll you off the cliffs, and make you a burned-out mountain.6126
No rock will be taken from you for a cornerstone, nor any stone for a foundation, for you will be desolate62 forever," declares the LORD.
"Lift up a banner63 in the land! Blow the trumpet among the nations! Prepare the nations for battle against her; summon against her these kingdoms:64 Ararat,65 Minni and Ashkenaz.66 Appoint a commander against her; send up horses like a swarm of locusts.6728
Prepare the nations for battle against her-- the kings of the Medes,68 their governors and all their officials, and all the countries they rule.6929
The land trembles70 and writhes, for the LORD's purposes71 against Babylon stand-- to lay waste72 the land of Babylon so that no one will live there.7330
Babylon's warriors74 have stopped fighting; they remain in their strongholds. Their strength is exhausted; they have become like women.75 Her dwellings are set on fire;76 the bars77 of her gates are broken.
One courier78 follows another and messenger follows messenger to announce to the king of Babylon that his entire city is captured,7932
the river crossings seized, the marshes set on fire,80 and the soldiers terrified.81"
This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: "The Daughter of Babylon82 is like a threshing floor83 at the time it is trampled; the time to harvest84 her will soon come.85"
"Nebuchadnezzar86 king of Babylon has devoured87 us,88 he has thrown us into confusion, he has made us an empty jar. Like a serpent he has swallowed us and filled his stomach with our delicacies, and then has spewed89 us out.
May the violence90 done to our fleshe be upon Babylon," say the inhabitants of Zion. "May our blood be on those who live in Babylonia," says Jerusalem.9136
Therefore, this is what the LORD says: "See, I will defend your cause92 and avenge93 you; I will dry up94 her sea and make her springs dry.
Babylon will be a heap of ruins, a haunt95 of jackals, an object of horror and scorn,96 a place where no one lives.9738
Her people all roar like young lions,98 they growl like lion cubs.
But while they are aroused, I will set out a feast for them and make them drunk,99 so that they shout with laughter-- then sleep forever100 and not awake," declares the LORD.10140
"I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams and goats.10241
"How Sheshachf103 will be captured,104 the boast of the whole earth seized! What a horror105 Babylon will be among the nations!
