6 También tenía puestos protectores de bronce en las piernas y llevaba una jabalina de bronce sobre el hombro.

7 El asta de su lanza era tan pesada y gruesa como un rodillo de telar, con una punta de hierro que pesaba casi siete kilos.
Su escudero iba delante de él.

8 Entonces Goliat se detuvo y gritó mofándose de los israelitas: «¿Por qué salen todos ustedes a pelear? Yo soy el campeón filisteo, pero ustedes no son más que siervos de Saúl. ¡Elijan a un hombre para que venga aquí a pelear conmigo!

9 Si me mata, entonces seremos sus esclavos; pero si yo lo mato a él, ¡ustedes serán nuestros esclavos!

10 ¡Hoy desafío a los ejércitos de Israel! ¡Envíenme a un hombre que me enfrente!».

11 Cuando Saúl y los israelitas lo escucharon, quedaron aterrados y profundamente perturbados.

12 Isaí envía a David al campamento de Saúl
Ahora bien, David era hijo de un hombre llamado Isaí, un efrateo de Belén, en la tierra de Judá. En ese tiempo Isaí era anciano y tenía ocho hijos.

13 Sus tres hijos mayores —Eliab, Abinadab y Simea—
ya se habían unido al ejército de Saúl para pelear contra los filisteos.

14 David era el menor de los hijos. Sus tres hermanos mayores se quedaron con el ejército de Saúl,

15 pero David iba y venía para ayudar a su padre con las ovejas en Belén.

16 Durante cuarenta días, cada mañana y cada tarde, el campeón filisteo se paseaba dándose aires delante del ejército israelita.

INTRODUCTION TO FIRST SAMUEL 17

This chapter relates how the armies of Israel, and of the Philistines, prepared for battle, and where, 1Sa 17:1-3, describes a champion of the Philistines, who defied the armies of Israel, 1Sa 17:4-11, and while he was so doing, it informs us that David came into the camp, and he heard his words, and signified to one and another his inclination to fight with him, 1Sa 17:12-30, which being reported to Saul, David was sent for by him, and much discourse passed between them about it, 1Sa 17:31-37 when we are told the manner in which he engaged with the Philistine, and the victory he obtained over him, 1Sa 17:38-51 upon which the Philistines fled, and Israel pursued them; and on account of this action David was taken notice of by Saul, and brought to court again, as the following chapter shows, 1Sa 17:52-58.
