Now it came about in thosedays, 1when Moses had grown up, that he went out to his brethren and looked on their 2hardlabors; and 3he saw an Egyptianbeating a Hebrew, one of his brethren.

So he lookedthisway and that, and when he sawthere was noone around, he 4struckdown the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.

He went out 5the nextday, and behold, twoHebrews were fighting with each other; and he said to the offender, "Why are you striking your companion?"

But he said, "6Whomade you a prince or a judgeover us? Are you intending to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?" Then Moses was afraid and said, "Surely the matter has become known."
Moses Escapes to Midian
15 When Pharaohheard of thismatter, he tried to killMoses. But 7Mosesfled from the presence of Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian, and he satdown8by a well.

Now 9the priest of Midian had sevendaughters; and 10they came to drawwater and filled the troughs to water their father'sflock.

Then the shepherdscame and drove them away, but 11Mosesstood up and helped them and watered their flock.

When they came to 12Reuel their father, he said, "Why have you come back so soontoday?"

So they said, "An Egyptiandelivered us from the hand of the shepherds, and what is more, he evendrew the water for us and watered the flock."

He said to his daughters, "Where is he then? Why is it that you have left the manbehind? Invite him to have something to eat."

13Moses was willing to dwell with the man, and he gave his daughter14Zipporah to Moses.

Then she gavebirth to 15a son, and he named* him Gershom, for he said, "I have been16a sojourner in a foreignland."

Now it came about in the course of thosemanydays that the king of Egyptdied. And the sons of Israel17sighedbecause of the bondage, and they cried out; and 18their cry for helpbecause of their bondagerose up to God.

So 19Godheard their groaning; and Godremembered20His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
