Jeremiah 43:8-13

8 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah in 1Tahpanhes:
9 "Take in your hands large stones and hide them in the mortar in the pavement that is at the entrance to Pharaoh's palace in 2Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah,
10 and say to them, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, 3my servant, 4and I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden, and he will spread his royal canopy over them.
11 He shall come 5and strike the land of Egypt, 6giving over to the pestilence those who are doomed to the pestilence, to captivity those who are doomed to captivity, and to the sword those who are doomed to the sword.
12 7I shall kindle a fire 8in the temples of the gods of Egypt, and he shall burn them 9and carry them away captive. 10And he shall clean the land of Egypt 11as a shepherd cleans his cloak of vermin, and he shall go away from there in peace.
13 He shall break the 12obelisks of Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt, 13and the temples of the gods of Egypt he shall burn with fire.'"

Jeremiah 43:8-13 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 43

This chapter contains the answer of the princes and people to the prophet's message; a relation of their going into Egypt; and a prophecy of the destruction of that land. The persons that gave the answer are described, some by name, and all by their character; and the time of their giving it is mentioned, in which they charge the prophet with a falsehood; impute the whole to an instigation of Baruch, and an ill design of his, and so were disobedient to the command of God, Jer 43:1-4; and went into Egypt, and carried all with them, of every rank, age, and sex, and even Baruch, and the prophet too, and came to Tahpanhes, the seat of the kings of Egypt, Jer 43:5-7; upon this a prophecy is delivered out, concerning the destruction of that country, which is signified by a symbol explained; the person, the instrument of it, is mentioned by name, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; the devastation he should make is expressed by slaying with the sword, and carrying into captivity; by burning the temples of their gods, and breaking their images in pieces, Jer 43:8-13.
