Numbers 33:1-49

1 These were the stages of the Israelites' journey when they went out of the land of Egypt by their military divisions under the leadership of Moses and Aaron.
2 At the Lord's command, Moses wrote down the starting points for the stages of their journey; these are the stages [listed] by their starting points:
3 They departed from Rameses[a] in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the month. On the day after the Passover[b] the Israelites went out triumphantly[c] in the sight of all the Egyptians.
4 Meanwhile, the Egyptians were burying every firstborn male the Lord had struck down among them, for the Lord had executed judgment against their gods.[d]
5 The Israelites departed from Rameses and camped at Succoth.[e]
6 They departed from Succoth and camped at Etham,[f] which is on the edge of the wilderness.
7 They departed from Etham and turned back to Pi-hahiroth,[g] which faces Baal-zephon,[h] and they camped before Migdol.[i]
8 They departed from Pi-hahiroth[j] and crossed through the middle of the sea[k] into the wilderness. They took a three-day journey into the Wilderness of Etham and camped at Marah.[l]
9 They departed from Marah and came to Elim.[m] There were 12 springs of water and 70 date palms at Elim, so they camped there.
10 They departed from Elim and camped by the Red Sea.
11 They departed from the Red Sea and camped in the Wilderness of Sin.[n]
12 They departed from the Wilderness of Sin and camped in Dophkah.
13 They departed from Dophkah and camped at Alush.
14 They departed from Alush and camped at Rephidim,[o] where there was no water for the people to drink.[p]
15 They departed from Rephidim and camped in the Wilderness of Sinai.[q]
16 They departed from the Wilderness of Sinai and camped at Kibroth-hattaavah.[r]
17 They departed from Kibroth-hattaavah and camped at Hazeroth.[s]
18 They departed from Hazeroth and camped at Rithmah.
19 They departed from Rithmah and camped at Rimmon-perez.
20 They departed from Rimmon-perez and camped at Libnah.
21 They departed from Libnah and camped at Rissah.
22 They departed from Rissah and camped at Kehelathah.
23 They departed from Kehelathah and camped at Mount Shepher.
24 They departed from Mount Shepher and camped at Haradah.
25 They departed from Haradah and camped at Makheloth.
26 They departed from Makheloth and camped at Tahath.
27 They departed from Tahath and camped at Terah.
28 They departed from Terah and camped at Mithkah.
29 They departed from Mithkah and camped at Hashmonah.
30 They departed from Hashmonah and camped at Moseroth.
31 They departed from Moseroth and camped at Bene-jaakan.[t]
32 They departed from Bene-jaakan and camped at Hor-haggidgad.[u]
33 They departed from Hor-haggidgad and camped at Jotbathah.[v]
34 They departed from Jotbathah and camped at Abronah.
35 They departed from Abronah and camped at Ezion-geber.[w]
36 They departed from Ezion-geber and camped in the Wilderness of Zin[x] (that is, Kadesh).
37 They departed from Kadesh and camped at Mount Hor[y] on the edge of the land of Edom.
38 At the Lord's command, Aaron the priest climbed Mount Hor and died there on the first [day] of the fifth month in the fortieth year after the Israelites went out of the land of Egypt.[z]
39 Aaron was 123 years old when he died on Mount Hor.
40 At that time the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev in the land of Canaan,[aa] heard the Israelites were coming.
41 They departed from Mount Hor and camped at Zalmonah.
42 They departed from Zalmonah and camped at Punon.
43 They departed from Punon and camped at Oboth.[ab]
44 They departed from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim on the border of Moab.[ac]
45 They departed from Iyim[ad] and camped at Dibon-gad.[ae]
46 They departed from Dibon-gad and camped at Almon-diblathaim.[af]
47 They departed from Almon-diblathaim and camped in the Abarim[ag] [range] facing Nebo.[ah]
48 They departed from the Abarim [range] and camped on the plains of Moab by the Jordan [across from] Jericho.[ai]
49 They camped by the Jordan from Beth-jeshimoth[aj] to Acacia Meadows[ak] [al] on the plains of Moab.

Numbers 33:1-49 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO NUMBERS 33

This chapter gives an account of the journeys of the people of Israel, from their first coming out of Egypt, to their arrival in the plains of Moab by Jordan, and the names of the various stations where they rested are given, Nu 33:1-49 and they are ordered, when they passed over Jordan, to drive out the Canaanites, destroy their idols, and divide the land among their families in their several tribes, Nu 33:50-54 or otherwise it is threatened the Canaanites should be troublesome and vexatious to them, even those that remained; and it might be expected God would do to the Israelites as he thought to do to those nations, Nu 33:55,56.
