Derrota de Sijón, rey de Hesbón

24 »Después nos dijo el SEÑOR: “Emprendan de nuevo el viaje y crucen el arroyo Arnón. Yo les entrego a Sijón el amorreo, rey de Hesbón, y su tierra. Láncense a la conquista. Declárenle la guerra.

25 Hoy mismo comenzaré a infundir entre todas las naciones que hay debajo del cielo terror y espanto hacia ustedes. Cuando ellas escuchen hablar de ustedes, temblarán y se llenarán de pánico”.

26 »Desde el desierto de Cademot envié mensajeros a Sijón, rey de Hesbón, con esta oferta de paz:

27 “Déjanos pasar por tu país; nos mantendremos en el camino principal, sin desviarnos ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda.

28 Te pagaremos todo el alimento y toda el agua que consumamos. Solo permítenos pasar,

29 tal como nos lo permitieron los descendientes de Esaú, que viven en Seír, y los moabitas, que viven en Ar. Necesitamos cruzar el Jordán para entrar en la tierra que nos da el SEÑOR nuestro Dios”.

30 »Pero Sijón, rey de Hesbón, se negó a dejarnos pasar por allí, porque el SEÑOR nuestro Dios había ofuscado su espíritu y endurecido su corazón, para hacerlo súbdito nuestro, como lo es hasta hoy.

31 Entonces el SEÑOR me dijo: “Ahora mismo voy a entregarles a Sijón y su país. Láncense a conquistarlo, y tomen posesión de su territorio”.

32 »Cuando Sijón, acompañado de todo su ejército, salió a combatirnos en Yahaza,

33 el SEÑOR nuestro Dios nos lo entregó y lo derrotamos, junto con sus hijos y todo su ejército.

34 En aquella ocasión conquistamos todas sus ciudades y las destruimos por completo; matamos a varones, mujeres y niños. ¡Nadie quedó con vida!

35 Solo nos llevamos el ganado y el botín de las ciudades que conquistamos.

36 Desde Aroer, que está a la orilla del arroyo Arnón, hasta Galaad, no hubo ciudad que nos ofreciera resistencia; el SEÑOR nuestro Dios nos entregó las ciudades una a una.

37 Sin embargo, conforme a la orden del SEÑOR nuestro Dios, no nos acercamos al territorio amonita, es decir, a toda la franja que se extiende a lo largo del arroyo Jaboc, ni a las ciudades de la región montañosa.

INTRODUCTION TO DEUTERONOMY 2

In this chapter Moses goes on with his account of the affairs of the people of Israel, and what befell them, how they turned into the wilderness again; but passes over in silence their travels there, till they came to Mount Self, where having been some time they were bid to depart, De 2:1-3, and were directed not to meddle with the Edomites, or take anything from them, but pay them for what they should have of them, since they lacked not, De 2:4-8, nor to distress the Moabites, of whose country, as formerly inhabited, and also of Edom, some account is given, De 2:9-12, when they were bid to go over the brook Zered, to which from their coming from Kadeshbarnea was the space of thirty eight years, in which time the former generation was consumed, De 2:13-16 and now passing along the borders of Moab, they were ordered not to meddle with nor distress the children of Ammon, of whose land also, and the former inhabitants of it, an account is given, De 2:17-23, then passing over the river Arnon, they are bid to fight with Sihon king of the Amorites, and possess his land, De 2:24,25 to whom they sent messengers, desiring leave to pass through his land, and to furnish them with provisions for their money, as the Edomites and Moabites had done, De 2:26-29 but he refusing, this gave them an opportunity to attack him, in which they succeeded, slew him and his people, and took possession of his country, De 2:30-37.
