Jeremías 22:14-24

14 Dice: “Construiré un palacio magnífico
con habitaciones enormes y muchas ventanas.
Lo revestiré con cedro fragante
y lo pintaré de un rojo agradable”.

15 ¡Pero un hermoso palacio de cedro no hace a un gran rey!
Josías, tu padre, también tenía mucha comida y bebida;
pero él era justo y recto en todo lo que hacía.
Por esa razón Dios lo bendijo.

16 Hizo justicia al pobre y al necesitado y los ayudó,
y le fue bien en todo.
¿No es eso lo que significa conocerme?
—dice el Señor
—.

17 ¡Pero tú, solo tienes ojos para la avaricia y la deshonestidad!
Asesinas al inocente,
oprimes al pobre y reinas sin piedad».

18 Por lo tanto, esto dice el Señor
acerca de Joacim, hijo del rey Josías:
«El pueblo no llorará por él, lamentandose entre sí:
“¡Ay, mi hermano! ¡Ay, mi hermana!”.
Sus súbditos no llorarán por él, lamentando:
“¡Ay, nuestro amo ha muerto! ¡Ay, su esplendor se ha ido!”.

19 Será enterrado como un burro muerto:
¡arrastrado fuera de Jerusalén y arrojado fuera de las puertas!

20 Llora por tus aliados en el Líbano;
grita por ellos en Basán.
Búscalos en las regiones al oriente del río.
Mira, todos han sido destruidos.
No quedó nadie para ayudarte.

21 Te lo advertí cuando eras próspero
pero respondiste: “¡No me fastidies!”.
Has sido así desde tu niñez,
¡nunca me obedeces!

22 Y ahora a tus aliados se los llevará el viento.
Todos tus amigos serán llevados cautivos.
Seguramente para entonces verás tu maldad y te avergonzarás.

23 Puede que sea lindo vivir en un palacio magnífico,
recubierto con madera de cedros del Líbano,
pero pronto gemirás con punzadas de angustia,
angustia como la de una mujer con dolores de parto.

24 Mensaje a Joaquín
»Tan cierto como que yo vivo —dice el Señor
—, te abandonaré, Joaquín,
hijo de Joacim, rey de Judá. Aunque fueras el anillo con mi sello oficial en mi mano derecha, te arrancaría.

Jeremías 22:14-24 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 22

This chapter is a prophecy of what should befall the sons of Josiah, Jehoahaz or Shallum; Jehoiakim and Jeconiah. It begins with an exhortation to the then reigning prince, Jehoiakim, his family and court, to do justice, relieve the oppressed, and refrain from doing injury to any; with a promise of prosperity upon so doing, Jer 22:1-4; but, on the contrary behaviour, the king's family, however precious they had been in the sight of the Lord, should be destroyed, by persons described as fit for such work, which would occasion others to inquire the cause of such destruction; when it would be told them, it was for their apostasy from the Lord, their breaking covenant with him, and their idolatry, Jer 22:5-9; then of Shallum, who was then carried captive, it is predicted that he should never return more, which was matter of greater lamentation than the death of his father Josiah, Jer 22:10-12; next Jehoiakim, the present king on the throne, is reproved, and a woe denounced upon him for his injustice, luxury, covetousness, rapine, and murders, Jer 22:13-17; and it is particularly threatened that he should die unlamented, and have no burial, Jer 22:18,19; and then the people of the land are called upon to mourning and lamentation, their kings one after another being carried captive, Jer 22:20-23; also Jeconiah the king's son, and who succeeded him, is threatened with rejection from the Lord, and a delivery of him up into the hand of the king of Babylon, with exile in a strange country, and death there, and that without children; so that Solomon's line should cease in him, Jer 22:24-30.
