Jeremías 44:1-11

1 Castigo por idolatría
Este es el mensaje que recibió Jeremías con relación a los judíos que vivían en el norte de Egipto, en las ciudades de Migdol, Tafnes y Menfis
y también en el sur de Egipto.

2 «Esto dice el Señor
de los Ejércitos Celestiales, Dios de Israel: ustedes vieron las calamidades que traje sobre Jerusalén y sobre todas las ciudades de Judá. Ahora están abandonadas y en ruinas.

3 Ellos provocaron mi enojo con toda su perversidad. Quemaban incienso y rendían culto a otros dioses, dioses que ni ellos ni ustedes ni ninguno de sus antepasados conocieron.

4 »Una y otra vez envié a mis siervos, los profetas, para rogarles: “No hagan estas cosas horribles que tanto detesto”,

5 pero mi pueblo no quiso escucharme ni apartarse de su conducta perversa. Siguieron quemando incienso a esos dioses.

6 Por eso mi furia se desbordó y cayó como fuego sobre las ciudades de Judá y en las calles de Jerusalén, que hasta hoy son unas ruinas desoladas.

7 »Ahora, el Señor
Dios de los Ejércitos Celestiales, Dios de Israel, les pregunta: ¿por qué se destruyen ustedes mismos? Pues ninguno de ustedes sobrevivirá: ningún hombre, mujer o niño de entre ustedes que haya venido aquí desde Judá, ni siquiera los bebés que llevan en brazos.

8 ¿Por qué provocan mi enojo quemando incienso a ídolos que ustedes han hecho aquí en Egipto? Lo único que lograrán es destruirse y hacerse a sí mismos objeto de maldición y burla para todas las naciones de la tierra.

9 ¿Acaso han olvidado los pecados de sus antepasados, los pecados de los reyes y las reinas de Judá, y los pecados que ustedes y sus esposas cometieron en Judá y en Jerusalén?

10 Hasta este mismo instante no han mostrado remordimiento ni reverencia. Ninguno ha elegido obedecer mi palabra ni los decretos que les di a ustedes y a sus antepasados.

11 »Por lo tanto, esto dice el Señor
de los Ejércitos Celestiales, Dios de Israel: ¡estoy decidido a destruir a cada uno de ustedes!

Jeremías 44:1-11 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 44

This chapter contains a sermon of Jeremiah's to the Jews in Egypt, reproving them for their idolatry there; their answer to it, expressing their resolution to continue in their idolatrous practices; and a denunciation of judgments upon them, of which a sign is given. The sermon begins with observing to them the destruction of Jerusalem, and the causes of it, idolatry and contempt of the prophets, Jer 44:1-6; then follows an expostulation with the present Jews for doing the same things, and exposing themselves and their posterity to the same punishment, Jer 44:7-10; upon which they are threatened with the sore judgments of God that should come upon them, and cut them off in general, Jer 44:11-14; yet such were the impudence and obstinacy of this people, that they declared they would not hearken to the prophet, but persist in their idolatry; it having been better with them when they practised it than when they left it, Jer 44:15-19; to which the prophet replies by observing, that for the idolatry of their fathers their land was become a desolation and a curse, as at this day, Jer 44:20-23; and assures them that destruction would come from the Lord upon them, which he had swore to, Jer 44:24-28; and a sign of it is given; the delivery of the king of Egypt into the hand of the king of Babylon, Jer 44:29,30.
