Jeremías 8:2-12

2 y los esparcirán al sol, y a la luna, y a todo el ejército del cielo, a quien amaron, y a quienes sirvieron, y en pos de quienes anduvieron, y a quienes preguntaron, y a quienes se encorvaron. No serán recogidos, ni enterrados; serán por muladar sobre la faz de la tierra

3 Y se escogerá la muerte antes que la vida todo el resto que quedare de esta mala generación, en todos los lugares a donde arrojaré yo a los que quedaren, dijo el SEÑOR de los ejércitos

4 Les dirás asimismo: Así dijo el SEÑOR: ¿Por ventura el que cae, nunca se levanta? ¿El que se aparta, nunca torna

5 ¿Por qué es este pueblo de Jerusalén rebelde con rebeldía perpetua? Abrazaron el engaño, no quisieron volverse

6 Escuché y oí; no hablan derecho, no hay hombre que se arrepienta de su mal, diciendo: ¿Qué he hecho? Cada cual se volvió a su carrera, como caballo que arremete con ímpetu a la batalla

7 Aun la cigüeña en el cielo conoce su tiempo, y la tórtola, la grulla y la golondrina guardan el tiempo de su venida; mas mi pueblo no conoció el juicio del SEÑOR

8 ¿Cómo decís: Nosotros somos sabios, y la ley del SEÑOR tenemos con nosotros? Ciertamente, he aquí que en vano se cortó la pluma, por demás fueron los escribas

9 Los sabios se avergonzaron, se espantaron y fueron presos; he aquí que aborrecieron la palabra del SEÑOR; ¿y qué sabiduría tienen

10 Por tanto, daré a otros sus mujeres, y sus heredades a quien las heredará, porque desde el chico hasta el grande cada uno sigue la avaricia; desde el profeta hasta el sacerdote todos practican el engaño

11 Y curaron el quebrantamiento de la hija de mi pueblo con liviandad, diciendo: Paz, paz; y no hay paz

12 ¿Se han avergonzado de haber hecho abominación? Por cierto no se han corrido de vergüenza, ni supieron avergonzarse; caerán, por tanto, entre los que cayeren, cuando los visitare, caerán, dice el SEÑOR

Jeremías 8:2-12 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 8

In this chapter the prophet goes on to denounce grievous calamities upon the people of the Jews; such as would make death more eligible than life; and that because of their idolatry, Jer 8:1-3 and also because of their heinous backslidings in other respects, and continuance in them, Jer 8:4,5 likewise their impenitence and stupidity, Jer 8:6,7 their vain conceit of themselves and their own wisdom; their false interpretation of Scripture, and their rejection of the word of God, Jer 8:8,9 their covetousness, for which it is said their wives and fields should be given to others, Jer 8:10, their flattery of the people, and their impudence, on account of which, ruin and consumption, and a blast on their vines and fig trees, are threatened, Jer 8:11-13, their consternation is described, by their fleeing to their defenced cities; by their sad disappointment in the expectation of peace and prosperity; and the near approach of their enemies; devouring their land, and all in it; who are compared to serpents and cockatrices that cannot be charmed, Jer 8:14-17 and the chapter is closed with the prophet's expressions of sorrow and concern for his people, because of their distress their idolatry had brought upon them; and because of their hopeless, and seemingly irrecoverable, state and condition, Jer 8:18-22.
