They advance as through a gaping breach;1 amid the ruins they come rolling in.
Terrors2 overwhelm me;3 my dignity is driven away as by the wind, my safety vanishes like a cloud.4
"And now my life ebbs away;5 days of suffering grip me.6
Night pierces my bones; my gnawing pains never rest.7
In his great power8 [God] becomes like clothing to me; he binds me like the neck of my garment.
He throws me into the mud,9 and I am reduced to dust and ashes.10
"I cry out to you,11 O God, but you do not answer;12 I stand up, but you merely look at me.
You turn on me ruthlessly;13 with the might of your hand14 you attack me.15
You snatch me up and drive me before the wind;16 you toss me about in the storm.17
I know you will bring me down to death,18 to the place appointed for all the living.19
