5Then He pouredwater into the basin, and began to 1wash the disciples'feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.
6
So He came to SimonPeter. He said to Him, "Lord, do You wash my feet?"
7
Jesusanswered and said to him, "What I do you do not realizenow, but you will understand2hereafter*."
8
Petersaid to Him, "Never* shall You wash my feet!" Jesusanswered him, "3If I do not wash you, 4you havenopart with Me."
9
SimonPetersaid to Him, "Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head."
10
Jesussaid to him, "He who has bathedneedsonly** to wash his feet, but is completelyclean; and 5you are clean, but not all of you."
11
For 6He knew the one who was betraying Him; for thisreason He said, "Not all of you are clean."
12
Sowhen He had washed their feet, and 7taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, "Do you knowwhat I have done to you?
13
"You call Me 8Teacher and 9Lord; and you are right, for so I am.
14
"If I then, 10the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you alsoought to washoneanother'sfeet.
15
"For I gave you 11an example that you also should do as I did to you.
16
"Truly, truly, I say to you, 12a slave is not greater than his master, nor is 13one who is sentgreater than the one who sent him.
17
"If you knowthesethings, you are 14blessedif you do them.
18
"15I do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have 16chosen; but it is 17that the Scripture may be fulfilled, '18HE WHO EATS MY BREAD HAS LIFTED UP HIS HEELAGAINST ME.'
19
"From now on 19I am telling you before it comes to pass, so that when it does occur, you may believe that 20I am He.
20
"Truly, truly, I say to you, 21he who receiveswhomever* I sendreceives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me."
Jesus Predicts His Betrayal
21 When Jesus had saidthis, He 22became troubled in spirit, and testified and said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, that 23one of you will betray Me."
22
The disciples began looking at oneanother, 24at a loss to know of whichone He was speaking.
23
There was reclining on 25Jesus'bosomone of His disciples, 26whomJesusloved.
24
SoSimonPetergestured to him, and said to him, "Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking."
25
He, 27leaningbackthus on Jesus'bosom, said to Him, "Lord, who is it?"
26
Jesusthenanswered, "That is the one for whom I shall dip the morsel and give it to him."So when He had dipped the morsel, He took and gave it to Judas, 28the son of SimonIscariot.
27
After the morsel, 29Satanthen30entered into him. ThereforeJesussaid to him, "What you do, doquickly."
28
Nownoone of thosereclining at the table knew for what purpose He had saidthis to him.
29
For some were supposing, becauseJudas31had the moneybox, that Jesus was saying to him, "Buy the things we haveneed of 32for the feast "; orelse, that he should 33givesomething to the poor.
30
So after receiving the morsel he went out immediately; and 34it was night.
31
Thereforewhen he had gone out, Jesussaid, "Now is 35the Son of Man36glorified, and 37God is glorified in Him;
32
ifGod is glorified in Him, 38God will alsoglorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately.
33
"39Littlechildren, I am with you 40a littlewhilelonger. 41You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, now I alsosay to you, 'Where I am going, you cannot*come.'
34
"A 42newcommandment I give to you, 43that you loveoneanother, 44even as I have loved you, that you alsoloveoneanother.
35
"45By thisallmen will know that you are My disciples, if you havelove for oneanother."
36
SimonPetersaid to Him, "Lord, where are You going?" Jesusanswered, "46Where I go, you cannot*follow Me now; but 47you will followlater."
37
Petersaid to Him, "Lord, why*can I not follow You rightnow? 48I will laydown my life for You."
38
Jesusanswered, "Will you laydown your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, 49a rooster will not crowuntil you deny Me threetimes.
