Psalms 119:65-176

Teth.

You have dealt well with Your servant, O LORD, according to Your word.
Teach me good 1discernment and knowledge, For I believe in Your commandments.
2Before I was afflicted I went astray, But now I keep Your word.
You are 3good and 4do good; 5Teach me Your statutes.
The arrogant have 6forged a lie against me; With all my heart I will 7observe Your precepts.
Their heart is 8covered with fat, But I 9delight in Your law.
It is 10good for me that I was afflicted, That I may learn Your statutes.
The 11law of Your mouth is better to me Than thousands of gold and silver pieces. Yodh.

Yodh.

12Your hands made me and fashioned me; 13Give me understanding, that I may learn Your commandments.
May those who fear You 14see me and be glad, Because I 15wait for Your word.
I know, O LORD, that Your judgments are 16righteous, And that 17in faithfulness You have afflicted me.
O may Your lovingkindness comfort me, According to Your word to Your servant.
May 18Your compassion come to me that I may live, For Your law is my 19delight.
May 20the arrogant be ashamed, for they subvert me 21with a lie; But I shall 22meditate on Your precepts.
May those who fear You turn to me, Even those who know Your testimonies.
May my heart be 23blameless in Your statutes, So that I will not 24be ashamed. Kaph.

Kaph.

My 25soul languishes for Your salvation; I 26wait for Your word.
My 27eyes fail with longing for Your word, While I say, "When will You comfort me?"
Though I have 28become like a wineskin in the smoke, I do 29not forget Your statutes.
How many are the 30days of Your servant? When will You 31execute judgment on those who persecute me?
The arrogant have 32dug pits for me, Men who are not in accord with Your law.
All Your commandments are 33faithful; They have 34persecuted me with a lie; 35help me!
They almost destroyed me on earth, But as for me, I 36did not forsake Your precepts.
Revive me according to Your lovingkindness, So that I may keep the testimony of Your mouth. Lamedh.

Lamedh.

37Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven.
Your 38faithfulness continues throughout all generations; You 39established the earth, and it 40stands.
They stand this day according to Your 41ordinances, For 42all things are Your servants.
If Your law had not been my 43delight, Then I would have perished 44in my affliction.
I will 45never * forget Your precepts, For by them You have 46revived me.
I am Yours, 47save me; For I have 48sought Your precepts.
The wicked 49wait for me to destroy me; I shall diligently consider Your testimonies.
I have seen a limit to all perfection; Your commandment is exceedingly broad. Mem.

I understand 54more than the aged, Because I have 55observed Your precepts.
I have 56restrained my feet from every evil way, That I may keep Your word.
I have not 57turned aside from Your ordinances, For You Yourself have taught me.
How 58sweet are Your words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
From Your precepts I 59get understanding; Therefore * I 60hate every false way. Nun.

82Sustain me according to Your word, that I may live; And 83do not let me be ashamed of my hope.
Uphold me that I may be 84safe, That I may 85have regard for Your statutes continually.
You have rejected all those 86who wander from Your statutes, For their deceitfulness is useless.
You have removed all the wicked of the earth like 87dross; Therefore I 88love Your testimonies.
My flesh 89trembles for fear of You, And I am 90afraid of Your judgments. Ayin.

97I am Your servant; 98give me understanding, That I may know Your testimonies.
It is time for the LORD to 99act, For they have broken Your law.

110Turn to me and be gracious to me, After Your manner with those who love Your name.
Establish my 111footsteps in Your word, And do not let any iniquity 112have dominion over me.
113Redeem me from the oppression of man, That I may keep Your precepts.

Psalms 119:65-176 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO PSALM 119

This psalm is generally thought to be written by David, but when is uncertain; very probably towards the decline of life; and, as some think, for the sake or his son Solomon. It seems to be a collection of observations on the word of God and its precepts, the usefulness and excellency of it, he had made in the course of his life; interspersed with various petitions for the grace of God, to enable him to observe it. The psalm is a very extraordinary one; partly on account of the unusual length of it, it being more than double the length of the longest psalm in the whole book; and partly on account of its curious composition. It consists of twenty two parts, according to the number of the letters in the Hebrew alphabet; the names of which letters stand between each part; and every part consists of eight verses, all of which begin with the same letter: thus, for instance, the first eight verses begin with the letter a, "aleph", and the second eight verses begin with the letter b, "beth", and so on throughout; hence the Masorah calls this psalm the Great Alphabet. This the psalmist did, perhaps to excite attention to what he said, and also to help the memory. And it is observable that there are very few verses in the whole, not more than one or two, but what has something in it concerning the word of God, and its precepts and ordinances; there are nine or ten different words used relative to it, which signify much one and the same thing; as laws, statutes, judgments, testimonies Luther {m} observes, that neither Cicero, nor Virgil, nor Demosthenes, are to be compared with David for eloquence, as we see in the hundred nineteenth Psalm, where he divideth one sense and meaning into twenty two sorts. And it may also be remarked, that there is nothing in it concerning the tabernacle worship, or the rites and ceremonies of the legal dispensation; so that it seems to be calculated for, and is suited to, the word of God, and the ordinances of it, as we now have them in their full perfection: and the design of the whole is to show the fervent affection the psalmist had for the word of God, and to stir up the same in others.
