Zacharie 12:1-8

1 Oracle, parole de l'Eternel sur Israël. Ainsi parle l'Eternel, qui a étendu les cieux et fondé la terre, Et qui a formé l'esprit de l'homme au dedans de lui:

2 Voici, je ferai de Jérusalem une coupe d'étourdissement Pour tous les peuples d'alentour, Et aussi pour Juda dans le siège de Jérusalem.

3 En ce jour-là, je ferai de Jérusalem une pierre pesante pour tous les peuples; Tous ceux qui la soulèveront seront meurtris; Et toutes les nations de la terre s'assembleront contre elle.

4 En ce jour-là, dit l'Eternel, Je frapperai d'étourdissement tous les chevaux, Et de délire ceux qui les monteront; Mais j'aurai les yeux ouverts sur la maison de Juda, Quand je frapperai d'aveuglement tous les chevaux des peuples.

5 Les chefs de Juda diront en leur coeur: Les habitants de Jérusalem sont notre force, Par l'Eternel des armées, leur Dieu.

6 En ce jour-là, je ferai des chefs de Juda Comme un foyer ardent parmi du bois, Comme une torche enflammée parmi des gerbes; Ils dévoreront à droite et à gauche tous les peuples d'alentour, Et Jérusalem restera à sa place, à Jérusalem.

7 L'Eternel sauvera d'abord les tentes de Juda, Afin que la gloire de la maison de David, La gloire des habitants de Jérusalem ne s'élève pas au-dessus de Juda.

8 En ce jour-là, l'Eternel protégera les habitants de Jérusalem, Et le faible parmi eux sera dans ce jour comme David; La maison de David sera comme Dieu, Comme l'ange de l'Eternel devant eux.

Zacharie 12:1-8 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO ZECHARIAH 12

This chapter contains a prophecy of the defence, protection, and salvation of the church of God; and of the effusion of the Spirit; and of the conversion of the Jews in the latter day. It begins with a title and preface, describing the power of God, from the creation of the heavens and earth, and soul of man, Zec 12:1 then follows the subject matter of the prophecy, in a way of judgment upon the enemies of the people of God, and in a way of salvation to them. The judgments on their enemies are signified by various metaphors; by Jerusalem's being a cup of trembling, a burdensome stone, and a hearth, and torch of fire to them, Zec 12:2,3,6. The effects of which are to them astonishment, madness, blindness, and utter destruction; and to the people of God confidence in him, salvation from him, and strength and protection by him, Zec 12:4,5,7,8 and, at the same time that God will destroy all the enemies of his people, he will pour out his Spirit upon his chosen ones among the Jews. The consequence of which will be, their faith in Christ, signified by looking to him whom they have pierced; and their repentance towards God, expressed by mourning; and this illustrated by mourning for an only and firstborn son, Zec 12:9,10 and which is further illustrated by the mourning for Josiah in the valley of Megiddon; and by an enumeration of the several families in Jerusalem, that should separately mourn on this account, Zec 12:11-14.
