A mocker resents correction;1 he will not consult the wise.

A happy heart makes the face cheerful,2 but heartache crushes the spirit.3

The discerning heart seeks knowledge,4 but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly.

All the days of the oppressed are wretched, but the cheerful heart has a continual feast.5

Better a little with the fear of the LORD than great wealth with turmoil.6

Better a meal of vegetables where there is love than a fattened calf with hatred.7

A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension,8 but a patient man calms a quarrel.9

The way of the sluggard is blocked with thorns,10 but the path of the upright is a highway.

A wise son brings joy to his father,11 but a foolish man despises his mother.

Folly delights a man who lacks judgment,12 but a man of understanding keeps a straight course.

Plans fail for lack of counsel,13 but with many advisers14 they succeed.15
