He lies in wait1 near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent,2 watching in secret for his victims.
He lies in wait like a lion in cover; he lies in wait to catch the helpless;3 he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.410
His victims are crushed,5 they collapse; they fall under his strength.
He says to himself, "God has forgotten;6 he covers his face and never sees."712
Arise,8 LORD! Lift up your hand,9 O God. Do not forget the helpless.1013
Why does the wicked man revile God?11 Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"?1214
But you, O God, do see trouble13 and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you;14 you are the helper15 of the fatherless.
Break the arm of the wicked and evil man;16 call him to account for his wickedness that would not be found out.
The LORD is King for ever and ever;17 the nations18 will perish from his land.
You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted;19 you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,2018
defending the fatherless21 and the oppressed,22 in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.
