By the rivers of Babylon1 we sat and wept2 when we remembered Zion.32
There on the poplars4 we hung our harps,53
for there our captors6 asked us for songs, our tormentors demanded7 songs of joy; they said, "Sing us one of the songs of Zion!"84
How can we sing the songs of the LORD9 while in a foreign land?

If I forget you,10 O Jerusalem, may my right hand forget [its skill].

May my tongue cling to the roof11 of my mouth if I do not remember12 you, if I do not consider Jerusalem13 my highest joy.

Remember, O LORD, what the Edomites14 did on the day Jerusalem fell.15 "Tear it down," they cried, "tear it down to its foundations!"168
O Daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction,17 happy is he who repays you for what you have done to us--

he who seizes your infants and dashes them18 against the rocks.
