1
I said, "I will watch my ways1 and keep my tongue from sin;2 I will put a muzzle on my mouth3 as long as the wicked are in my presence."
2
But when I was silent4 and still, not even saying anything good, my anguish5 increased.
3
My heart grew hot6 within me, and as I meditated,7 the fire8 burned; then I spoke with my tongue:
4
"Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days;9 let me know how fleeting10 is my life.115
You have made my days12 a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man's life is but a breath.13 "Selah"
6
Man is a mere phantom14 as he goes to and fro:15 He bustles about, but only in vain;16 he heaps up wealth,17 not knowing who will get it.187
"But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.198
Save me20 from all my transgressions;21 do not make me the scorn22 of fools.
9
I was silent;23 I would not open my mouth,24 for you are the one who has done this.2510
Remove your scourge from me; I am overcome by the blow26 of your hand.2711
You rebuke28 and discipline29 men for their sin; you consume30 their wealth like a moth31-- each man is but a breath.32 "Selah"
12
"Hear my prayer, O LORD, listen to my cry for help;33 be not deaf34 to my weeping.35 For I dwell with you as an alien,36 a stranger,37 as all my fathers were.3813
Look away from me, that I may rejoice again before I depart and am no more."39
