You sold your people for a pittance,1 gaining nothing from their sale.
You have made us a reproach2 to our neighbors,3 the scorn4 and derision5 of those around us.
You have made us a byword6 among the nations; the peoples shake their heads7 at us.
My disgrace8 is before me all day long, and my face is covered with shame916
at the taunts10 of those who reproach and revile11 me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.1217
All this happened to us, though we had not forgotten13 you or been false to your covenant.
Our hearts had not turned14 back; our feet had not strayed from your path.
But you crushed15 us and made us a haunt for jackals16 and covered us over with deep darkness.1720
If we had forgotten18 the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,1921
would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?2022
Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep21 to be slaughtered.22
