For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.

1 Have mercy¹ on me, O God, according to your unfailing love;² according to your great compassion³ blot out⁴ my transgressions.⁵ 2 Wash away⁶ all my iniquity and cleanse⁷ me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.⁸ 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned⁹ and done what is evil in your sight,¹⁰ so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.¹¹ 5 Surely I was sinful¹² at birth,¹³ sinful from the time my mother conceived me. 6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts^a; you teach^b me wisdom¹⁴ in the inmost place.¹⁵ 7 Cleanse¹⁶ me with hyssop,¹⁷ and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.¹⁸ 8 Let me hear joy and gladness;¹⁹ let the bones²⁰ you have crushed rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins²¹ and blot out²² all my iniquity. 10 Create in me a pure heart,²³ O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.²⁴ 11 Do not cast me²⁵ from your presence²⁶ or take your Holy Spirit²⁷ from me.
