But before they turned from the food they craved, even while it was still in their mouths,131
God's anger rose against them; he put to death the sturdiest2 among them, cutting down the young men of Israel.
In spite of all this, they kept on sinning;3 in spite of his wonders,4 they did not believe.533
So he ended their days in futility6 and their years in terror.
Whenever God slew them, they would seek7 him; they eagerly turned to him again.
They remembered that God was their Rock,8 that God Most High was their Redeemer.936
But then they would flatter him with their mouths,10 lying to him with their tongues;
their hearts were not loyal11 to him, they were not faithful to his covenant.
Yet he was merciful;12 he forgave13 their iniquities14 and did not destroy them. Time after time he restrained his anger15 and did not stir up his full wrath.
He remembered that they were but flesh,16 a passing breeze17 that does not return.
How often they rebelled18 against him in the desert19 and grieved him20 in the wasteland!
