God's anger rose against them; he put to death the sturdiest1 among them, cutting down the young men of Israel.
In spite of all this, they kept on sinning;2 in spite of his wonders,3 they did not believe.433
So he ended their days in futility5 and their years in terror.
Whenever God slew them, they would seek6 him; they eagerly turned to him again.
They remembered that God was their Rock,7 that God Most High was their Redeemer.836
But then they would flatter him with their mouths,9 lying to him with their tongues;
their hearts were not loyal10 to him, they were not faithful to his covenant.
Yet he was merciful;11 he forgave12 their iniquities13 and did not destroy them. Time after time he restrained his anger14 and did not stir up his full wrath.
He remembered that they were but flesh,15 a passing breeze16 that does not return.
How often they rebelled17 against him in the desert18 and grieved him19 in the wasteland!
Again and again they put God to the test;20 they vexed the Holy One of Israel.21
