They remembered that God was their Rock,1 that God Most High was their Redeemer.236
But then they would flatter him with their mouths,3 lying to him with their tongues;
their hearts were not loyal4 to him, they were not faithful to his covenant.
Yet he was merciful;5 he forgave6 their iniquities7 and did not destroy them. Time after time he restrained his anger8 and did not stir up his full wrath.
He remembered that they were but flesh,9 a passing breeze10 that does not return.
How often they rebelled11 against him in the desert12 and grieved him13 in the wasteland!
Again and again they put God to the test;14 they vexed the Holy One of Israel.1542
They did not remember16 his power-- the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,1743
the day he displayed his miraculous signs18 in Egypt, his wonders19 in the region of Zoan.
He turned their rivers to blood;20 they could not drink from their streams.
He sent swarms of flies21 that devoured them, and frogs22 that devastated them.
