Now the chiefpriests and the whole1Council kept trying to obtainfalsetestimonyagainstJesus, so that they might put Him to death.

They did not find any, even though manyfalsewitnessescameforward. But later on 2twocameforward,

and said, "Thismanstated, '3I amable to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in threedays.' "

The highprieststood up and said to Him, "Do You not answer? What is it that thesemen are testifyingagainst You?"

But 4Jesuskeptsilent. 5And the highpriestsaid to Him, "I 6adjure You by 7the livingGod, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, 8the Son of God."

Jesussaid to him, "9You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter* you will see10THE SON OF MANSITTING AT THE RIGHTHAND OF POWER, and 11COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN."

Then the highpriest12tore his robes and said, "He has blasphemed! Whatfurtherneed do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have nowheard the blasphemy;

what do you think?" They answered, "13He deservesdeath!"

14Then they 15spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and othersslapped Him,

and said, "16Prophesy to us, You Christ; who is the one who hit You?"
