1Then the wholebody of them got up and 1brought Him beforePilate.

2And they began to accuse Him, saying, "We foundthisman3misleading our nation and 4forbidding to paytaxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King."

SoPilateasked Him, saying, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And He answered him and said, "5It is as you say."

ThenPilatesaid to the chiefpriests and the crowds, "6I findnoguilt in thisman.

But they kept on insisting, saying, "He stirs up the people, teachingalloverJudea, 7starting from Galilee even as far as thisplace."

WhenPilateheard it, he askedwhether the man was a Galilean.

And when he learned that He belonged* to Herod'sjurisdiction, he sent Him to 8Herod, who himselfalso was in Jerusalem at that time.
Jesus before Herod
8NowHerod was veryglad when he sawJesus; for 9he hadwanted to see Him for a longtime, because he had been hearingabout Him and was hoping to seesomesignperformed by Him.

And he questioned Him at somelength*; but 10He answered him nothing.

And the chiefpriests and the scribes were standing there, accusing Him vehemently.

And Herod with his soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and mocking Him, 11dressed Him in a gorgeousrobe and sent Him back to Pilate.

Now12Herod and Pilatebecamefriends with oneanother that veryday; for before they had been*enemies with eachother.
Pilate Seeks Jesus' Release
13Pilatesummoned the chiefpriests and the 13rulers and the people,
14
and said to them, "You broughtthisman to me as one who 14incites the people to rebellion, and behold, having examined Him before you, I 15have foundnoguilt in thisman regarding the chargeswhich you makeagainst Him

"No, nor has 16Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothingdeservingdeath has beendone by Him.

"Therefore I will 17punish Him and release Him."

[Now he was obliged* to release to them at the feastone prisoner.]
18
But they cried out alltogether, saying, "18Away with thisman, and release for us Barabbas!"

(He was onewho had been thrown into prison for an insurrectionmade in the city, and for murder.
20
Pilate, wanting to releaseJesus, addressed them again,
21
but they kept on calling out, saying, "Crucify, crucify Him!
22
And he said to them the thirdtime, "Why, whatevil has thismandone? I have found in Him noguilt demanding death; therefore I will 19punish Him and release Him."

But they were insistent, with loudvoicesasking that He be crucified. And their voices began to prevail.
24
And Pilatepronouncedsentence that their demand be granted.
25
And he released the man they were asking for who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, but he deliveredJesus to their will.
