It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions,1 and to live self-controlled,2 upright and godly lives3 in this present age,

while we wait for the blessed hope--the glorious appearing4 of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,514
who gave himself for us6 to redeem us from all wickedness7 and to purify8 for himself a people that are his very own,9 eager to do what is good.10
