My dear children,1 I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate2 with the Father--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.
He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins,3 and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.4
We know5 that we have come to know him6 if we keep his commands.74
Those who say, "I know him,"8 but do not do what he commands are liars, and the truth is not in them.95
But if anyone obeys his word,10 love for Goda is truly made complete in them.11 This is how we know12 we are in him:
Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.137
Dear friends,14 I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning.15 This old command is the message you have heard.
Yet I am writing you a new command;16 its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing17 and the true light18 is already shining.199
Those who claim to be in the light but hate a fellow believer20 are still in the darkness.2110
Those who love their fellow believers live in the light,22 and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.2311
But those who hate a fellow believer24 are in the darkness and walk around in the darkness;25 they do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.26
I am writing to you, dear children,27 because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.2813
I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning.29 I am writing to you, young people, because you have overcome30 the evil one.3114
I write to you, dear children,32 because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning.33 I write to you, young people, because you are strong,34 and the word of God35 lives in you,36 and you have overcome the evil one.37
Do not love the world or anything in the world.38 If you love the world, love for the Fatherb is not in you.3916
For everything in the world--the cravings of sinful people,40 the lust of their eyes41 and their boasting about what they have and do--comes not from the Father but from the world.
The world and its desires pass away,42 but whoever does the will of God43 lives forever.
Dear children, this is the last hour;44 and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming,45 even now many antichrists have come.46 This is how we know it is the last hour.
They went out from us,47 but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.4820
But you have an anointing49 from the Holy One,50 and all of you know the truth.c5121
I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it52 and because no lie comes from the truth.
Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Messiah.d Such a person is the antichrist--denying the Father and the Son.5323
No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.5424
As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning55 remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.5625
And this is what he promised us--eternal life.5726
I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.5827
As for you, the anointing59 you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things60 and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit--just as it has taught you, remain in him.61
And now, dear children,62 continue in him, so that when he appears63 we may be confident64 and unashamed before him at his coming.6529
If you know that he is righteous,66 you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.67
