Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God1 our Savior2 and of Christ Jesus our hope,32
To Timothy4 my true son5 in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.6
As I urged you when I went into Macedonia,7 stay there in Ephesus8 so that you may command certain persons not to teach false doctrines9 any longer
or to devote themselves to myths10 and endless genealogies.11 Such things promote controversial speculations12 rather than advancing God's work--which is by faith.
The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart13 and a good conscience14 and a sincere faith.156
Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk.
They want to be teachers16 of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.178
We know that the law is good18 if one uses it properly.
We also know that the law is made not for the righteous19 but for lawbreakers and rebels,20 the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers,
for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers. And it is for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine2111
that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.22
I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength,23 that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service.2413
Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor25 and a violent man, I was shown mercy26 because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.2714
The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly,28 along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.2915
Here is a trustworthy saying30 that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners31--of whom I am the worst.
But for that very reason I was shown mercy32 so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience33 as an example for those who would believe34 in him and receive eternal life.3517
Now to the King36 eternal, immortal,37 invisible,38 the only God,39 be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.40
Timothy, my son,41 I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you,42 so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well,4319
holding on to faith and a good conscience,44 which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith.4520
Among them are Hymenaeus46 and Alexander,47 whom I have handed over to Satan48 to be taught not to blaspheme.
