Hear this word, you cows of Bashan1 on Mount Samaria,2 you women who oppress the poor3 and crush the needy4 and say to your husbands,5 "Bring us some drinks!6"
The Sovereign LORD has sworn by his holiness: "The time7 will surely come when you will be taken away8 with hooks,9 the last of you with fishhooks.a3
You will each go straight out through breaches in the wall,10 and you will be cast out toward Harmon,b " declares the LORD.
"Go to Bethel11 and sin; go to Gilgal12 and sin yet more. Bring your sacrifices every morning,13 your tithes14 every three years.c155
Burn leavened bread16 as a thank offering and brag about your freewill offerings17-- boast about them, you Israelites, for this is what you love to do," declares the Sovereign LORD.
"I gave you empty stomachs in every city and lack of bread in every town, yet you have not returned to me," declares the LORD.187
"I also withheld19 rain from you when the harvest was still three months away. I sent rain on one town, but withheld it from another.20 One field had rain; another had none and dried up.
People staggered from town to town for water21 but did not get enough22 to drink, yet you have not returned23 to me," declares the LORD.249
"Many times I struck your gardens and vineyards, destroying them with blight and mildew.25 Locusts26 devoured your fig and olive trees,27 yet you have not returned28 to me," declares the LORD.
"I sent plagues29 among you as I did to Egypt.30 I killed your young men31 with the sword, along with your captured horses. I filled your nostrils with the stench32 of your camps, yet you have not returned to me,"33 declares the LORD.3411
"I overthrew some of you as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.35 You were like a burning stick36 snatched from the fire, yet you have not returned to me," declares the LORD.3712
"Therefore this is what I will do to you, Israel, and because I will do this to you, Israel, prepare to meet your God."
