Woe to you1 who are complacent2 in Zion, and to you who feel secure3 on Mount Samaria,4 you notable men of the foremost nation, to whom the people of Israel come!5
Go to Kalneh6 and look at it; go from there to great Hamath,7 and then go down to Gath8 in Philistia. Are they better off than9 your two kingdoms? Is their land larger than yours?
You put off the evil day and bring near a reign of terror.10
You lie on beds inlaid with ivory and lounge on your couches.11 You dine on choice lambs and fattened calves.12
You strum away on your harps13 like David and improvise on musical instruments.14
You drink wine15 by the bowlful and use the finest lotions, but you do not grieve16 over the ruin of Joseph.17
Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile;18 your feasting and lounging will end.19
The Sovereign LORD has sworn by himself20--the LORD God Almighty declares: "I abhor21 the pride of Jacob22 and detest his fortresses;23 I will deliver up24 the city and everything in it.25"
If ten26 people are left in one house, they too will die.
And if the relative who comes to carry the bodies out of the house to burn them27 asks anyone who might be hiding there, "Is anyone else with you?" and he says, "No," then he will go on to say, "Hush!28 We must not mention the name of the LORD."
For the LORD has given the command, and he will smash29 the great house30 into pieces and the small house into bits.31
Do horses run on the rocky crags? Does one plow the sea with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison32 and the fruit of righteousness33 into bitterness34--
you who rejoice in the conquest of Lo Debar and say, "Did we not take Karnaim by our own strength?35"
For the LORD God Almighty declares, "I will stir up a nation36 against you, house of Israel, that will oppress you all the way from Lebo Hamath37 to the valley of the Arabah.38"
