The Song of Moses and Miriam

1 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song1 to the LORD: "I will sing2 to the LORD, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver3 he has hurled into the sea.4 2 "The LORD is my strength5 and my defensea; he has become my salvation.6 He is my God,7 and I will praise him, my father's God, and I will exalt8 him. 3 The LORD is a warrior;9 the LORD is his name.10 4 Pharaoh's chariots and his army11 he has hurled into the sea. The best of Pharaoh's officers are drowned in the Red Sea.b 5 The deep waters12 have covered them; they sank to the depths like a stone.13 6 Your right hand,14 LORD, was majestic in power. Your right hand,15 LORD, shattered16 the enemy. 7 "In the greatness of your majesty17 you threw down those who opposed you. You unleashed your burning anger;18 it consumed19 them like stubble. 8 By the blast of your nostrils20 the waters piled up.21 The surging waters stood up like a wall;22 the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea.23 9 The enemy boasted, 'I will pursue,24 I will overtake them. I will divide the spoils;25 I will gorge myself on them. I will draw my sword and my hand will destroy them.' 10 But you blew with your breath,26 and the sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters.27 11 Who among the gods is like you,28 LORD? Who is like you-- majestic in holiness,29 awesome in glory,30 working wonders?31 12 "You stretch out32 your right hand, and the earth swallows your enemies.33 13 In your unfailing love you will lead34 the people you have redeemed.35 In your strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling.36 14 The nations will hear and tremble;37 anguish38 will grip the people of Philistia.39 15 The chiefs40 of Edom41 will be terrified, the leaders of Moab will be seized with trembling,42 the peoplec of Canaan will melt43 away; 16 terror44 and dread will fall on them. By the power of your arm they will be as still as a stone45-- until your people pass by, LORD, until the people you boughtd46 pass by.47 17 You will bring48 them in and plant49 them on the mountain50 of your inheritance-- the place, LORD, you made for your dwelling,51 the sanctuary,52 Lord, your hands established. 18 "The LORD reigns for ever and ever."53 19 When Pharaoh's horses, chariots and horsemene went into the sea,54 the LORD brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground.55 20 Then Miriam56 the prophet,57 Aaron's sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels58 and dancing.59 21 Miriam sang60 to them: "Sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver61 he has hurled into the sea."62

The Waters of Marah and Elim

22 Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert63 of Shur.64 For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water.65 23 When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.f66) 24 So the people grumbled67 against Moses, saying, "What are we to drink?"68 25 Then Moses cried out69 to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a piece of wood. He threw70 it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the LORD issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test.71 26 He said, "If you listen carefully to the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep72 all his decrees,73 I will not bring on you any of the diseases74 I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals75 you." 27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped76 there near the water.
