Isaiah 10 (Today's New International Version)

View In My Bible
1 Woe1 to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees,2 2 to deprive3 the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people,4 making widows their prey and robbing the fatherless.5 3 What will you do on the day of reckoning,6 when disaster7 comes from afar? To whom will you run for help?8 Where will you leave your riches? 4 Nothing will remain but to cringe among the captives9 or fall among the slain.10 Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,11 his hand is still upraised.

God's Judgment on Assyria

5 "Woe12 to the Assyrian,13 the rod14 of my anger, in whose hand is the club15 of my wrath!16 6 I send him against a godless17 nation, I dispatch18 him against a people who anger me,19 to seize loot and snatch plunder,20 and to trample21 them down like mud in the streets. 7 But this is not what he intends,22 this is not what he has in mind; his purpose is to destroy, to put an end to many nations. 8 'Are not my commanders23 all kings?' he says. 9 'Has not Kalno24 fared like Carchemish?25 Is not Hamath26 like Arpad,27 and Samaria28 like Damascus?29 10 As my hand seized the kingdoms of the idols,30 kingdoms whose images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria-- 11 shall I not deal with Jerusalem and her images as I dealt with Samaria and her idols?31' " 12 When the Lord has finished all his work32 against Mount Zion33 and Jerusalem, he will say, "I will punish the king of Assyria34 for the willful pride35 of his heart and the haughty look36 in his eyes. 13 For he says: " 'By the strength of my hand37 I have done this,38 and by my wisdom, because I have understanding. I removed the boundaries of nations, I plundered their treasures;39 like a mighty one I subdueda their kings.40 14 As one reaches into a nest,41 so my hand reached for the wealth42 of the nations; as people gather abandoned eggs, so I gathered all the countries;43 not one flapped a wing, or opened its mouth to chirp.44' " 15 Does the ax raise itself above the one who swings it, or the saw boast against the one who uses it?45 As if a rod were to wield the person who lifts it up, or a club46 brandish one who is not wood! 16 Therefore, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, will send a wasting disease47 upon his sturdy warriors;48 under his pomp49 a fire50 will be kindled like a blazing flame. 17 The Light of Israel will become a fire,51 their Holy One52 a flame; in a single day it will burn and consume his thorns53 and his briers.54 18 The splendor of his forests55 and fertile fields it will completely destroy,56 as when sick people waste away. 19 And the remaining trees of his forests57 will be so few58 that a child could write them down.

The Remnant of Israel

20 In that day59 the remnant of Israel, the survivors60 of the house of Jacob, will no longer rely61 on him who struck them down62 but will truly rely63 on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.64 21 A remnant65 will return,b66 a remnant of Jacob will return to the Mighty God.67 22 Though your people be like the sand68 by the sea, Israel, only a remnant will return.69 Destruction has been decreed,70 overwhelming and righteous. 23 The Lord, the LORD Almighty, will carry out the destruction decreed71 upon the whole land.72 24 Therefore, this is what the Lord, the LORD Almighty, says: "My people who live in Zion,73 do not be afraid74 of the Assyrians, who beat75 you with a rod76 and lift up a club against you, as Egypt did. 25 Very soon77 my anger against you will end and my wrath78 will be directed to their destruction.79" 26 The LORD Almighty will lash80 them with a whip, as when he struck down Midian81 at the rock of Oreb; and he will raise his staff82 over the waters,83 as he did in Egypt. 27 In that day84 their burden85 will be lifted from your shoulders, their yoke86 from your neck;87 the yoke88 will be broken because you have grown so fat.c 28 They enter Aiath; they pass through Migron;89 they store supplies90 at Mikmash.91 29 They go over the pass, and say, "We will camp overnight at Geba.92" Ramah93 trembles; Gibeah94 of Saul flees.95 30 Cry out, Daughter Gallim!96 Listen, Laishah! Poor Anathoth!97 31 Madmenah is in flight; the people of Gebim take cover. 32 This day they will halt at Nob;98 they will shake their fist99 at the mount of Daughter Zion,100 at the hill of Jerusalem. 33 See, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, will lop off101 the boughs with great power. The lofty trees will be felled,102 the tall103 ones will be brought low.104 34 He will cut down105 the forest thickets with an ax; Lebanon106 will fall before the Mighty One.107
