A shoot1 will come up from the stump2 of Jesse;3 from his roots a Branch4 will bear fruit.52
The Spirit6 of the LORD will rest on him-- the Spirit of wisdom7 and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might,8 the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD--
and he will delight in the fear9 of the LORD. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,10 or decide by what he hears with his ears;114
but with righteousness12 he will judge the needy,13 with justice14 he will give decisions for the poor15 of the earth. He will strike16 the earth with the rod of his mouth;17 with the breath18 of his lips he will slay the wicked.195
Righteousness will be his belt20 and faithfulness21 the sash around his waist.226
The wolf will live with the lamb,23 the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearlinga together; and a little child will lead them.
The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox.248
Infants25 will play near the hole of the cobra; young children will put their hands into the viper's26 nest.
They will neither harm nor destroy27 on all my holy mountain,28 for the earth29 will be filled with the knowledge30 of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.
In that day31 the Root of Jesse32 will stand as a banner33 for the peoples; the nations34 will rally to him,35 and his resting place36 will be glorious.3711
In that day38 the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the surviving remnant39 of his people from Assyria,40 from Lower Egypt, from Upper Egypt,41 from Cush,b42 from Elam,43 from Babylonia,c from Hamath44 and from the islands45 of the Mediterranean.4612
He will raise a banner47 for the nations and gather48 the exiles of Israel;49 he will assemble the scattered people50 of Judah from the four quarters of the earth.5113
Ephraim's jealousy will vanish, and Judah's enemiesd will be destroyed; Ephraim will not be jealous of Judah, nor Judah hostile toward Ephraim.5214
They will swoop down on the slopes of Philistia53 to the west; together they will plunder the people to the east.54 They will lay hands on Edom55 and Moab,56 and the Ammonites57 will be subject to them.5815
The LORD will dry up59 the gulf of the Egyptian sea; with a scorching wind60 he will sweep his hand61 over the Euphrates River.62 He will break it up into seven streams so that anyone can cross over in sandals.6316
There will be a highway64 for the remnant65 of his people that is left from Assyria,66 as there was for Israel when they came up from Egypt.67
